AG-Macedon,_Alexander_III-3~0.jpg
GREEK, Macedonian Kingdom, Alexander III, 336-323 BC - Drachm - Signed DieAR Drachm (16mm, 4.26g): Price 2090A

Obv.: Head of Heracles right, wearing lion skin headdress, K on skin behind ear

Rev.: AΛEΞANΔPOY, Zeus seated left, holding scepter and eagle; monogram in left field.
This drachm is a lifetime issue from Miletos, circa 325-323 BC. It is signed by the artist who placed a "K" on the lion skin headdress behind Alexander's ear.

One could say Ho Hum just another drachm of Alexander III, however this coin is a little more interesting than most. From Roma Numismatics Limited’s 2012 description of a specimen it sold – “Extremely Rare. Only two specimens noted in ADM I (both in the ANS collection). This, and an equally rare contemporary issue at Magnesia ad Maeandrum are the only two instances of signed dies struck for Alexander.”

I was able to find two specimens in auction records. The Roma Numismatics Limited’s 2012 specimen in ACSEARCH (don’t use Price 2090A in the search use “signed die”). The Roma Numismatics Limited’s 2012 specimen should really be listed here, as pleased as I am with my specimen the Roma Numismatics Limited’s specimen is truly superior. The second specimen I found was this specimen in the NGC ancient coin auction records. The specimen shown here was sold twice in 2015 by Heritage I purchased the coin from the second sale.

MYSIA, Parion. 4th century BC. AR Hemidrachm13mm, 2.35 g, 6h.
Bull standing left, head right; round shield below / Gorgoneion, off center, Near VF.

Parion was a city of Mysia (Hellespontine Phrygia), located along the coast of the Hellespont, near the entrance to the Propontis. It was founded in the 8th/7th century BC by colonists from Miletos, Erythrai, and Paros (the latter of which are likely responsible for giving the city its name). The city began striking coinage in the late 6th century, consisting mainly of silver drachms with a gorgoneion on the obverse and a simple square incuse on the reverse. The gorgoneion remained a significant type on its civic coinage well into the early Roman Imperial period. Parion’s location relative to the Hellespont not only made it an important commercial center, as suggested by its prolific civic coinage, but also a strategically important city for the competing Hellenistic monarchies. Initially seized by the Macedonians under Alexander the Great, the city later switched hands multiple times between Lysimachos, Demetrios Poliorketes, the Seleukid kings from Seleukos I through Antiochos Hierax, and the Pergamene kingdom, who retained the city until it was annexed by Rome, circa 133 BC. Coinage was issued during all of these periods, though most of the coins were issues of the various kingdoms.

Parion was a city of Mysia, located along the coast of the Hellespont, near the entrance to the Propontis. It was founded in the 8th/7th century B.C. by colonists from Miletos, Erythrai, and Paros (who probably gave the city its name). It began striking coinage in the late 6th century, consisting mainly of silver drachms with a gorgoneion on the obverse and a simple square incuse on the reverse. The gorgoneion remained a significant type on its civic coinage into the Roman period. Parion’s location relative to the Hellespont not only made it an important commercial center, as suggested by its prolific civic coinage, but also a strategically important city for the competing Hellenistic monarchies.
