June 1900 saw a brief flurry of journalistic interest in the "Am I Not A Woman & A Sister" tokens. A specimen had been found in a garden in Indiana, apparently in one of the many towns that claim a connection to the Underground Railroad, and received a glowing and fanciful write up in the local newspaper. The paper claimed that it was a "Talisman of Slavery," and used as a token to ensure safe passage along the escaped slave's route, and that it was a very rare piece. The following week a newspaper in Maine recorded that a local collector had another example, again drawing a purported connection to the Underground Railroad. Astutely, the July 1900 edition of the American Journal of Numismatics pointed out that, while an isolated use like this was possible, it was not what the tokens were originally intended for.

004b01. Caesonia (?)Milonia Caesonia. Fourth wife of Caligula. Killed as part of the same plot against Caligula.

Coin: Carthago Nova, Spain. AE 28. 27mm, 11.17 g. Obv: C CAESAR AVG GERMANIC IMP P M TR P COS, laureate head right. Rev: CN ATEL FLAC CN POM FLAC II VIR Q V I N C, SAL-AVG across field, head of Caesonia (?) as Salus right. SGI 419, RPC 185.

NOTE: There is a dispute over the identification of the female bust on the reverse. Sear identifies it as Caesonia, (as the personification of Salus), the fourth wife of Caligula. RPC and Vagi identify it as Salus. There is one other provincial coin that clearly is of Caesonia.

MACRINUS~0.jpg
029a. MacrinusAugustus 11 April 217 -- 8 June 218

Mauretanian origin. Became Praetorian Prefect under Caracalla. While he was with Caracalla on operations against the Parthians, he learned of a prophecy that he would become emperor. Before Caracalla could act on this, Macrinus arranged for Caracalla's assassination and took the office of emperor. He then made a quick peace with the Parthians, which did not sit well with the army. Female members of the Severan family then took a major role in plotting for Macrinus's overthrow. A revolt broke out in Emesa, Syria, with Elegabalus as the putative leader. Macrinus fought a battle with them, lost, and was executed while fleeing.

Note.
BMCRE 525, pl. 57.9 (same reverse die). Cohen 1010 ;RIC II 365
The Reka Devnia hoard contained two specimens of this type, one like ours and one with a draped bust. Strack 202 records the two Reka Devnia coins in Sofia, BMCRE 525, two specimens in Paris, and only three others: Gnecchi Collection, L.A. Lawrence, and Ball VI, 1932, lot 1355. This is the sole appearance of the personification Patientia on Roman coins. Apparently her name was not well received, because it was very soon changed to INDVLGENTIA AVG, and with the new name the identical type, seated female figure extending right hand and holding scepter, was struck in substantial quantity. As Strack and Mattingly suggested, the sense of the Patientia type, since it was soon to be renamed Indulgentia, may have been "endurance of other people's troubles rather than one's own" (BMCRE III, p. cxli).
