Preparing to trim down my collection to one portait of each Roman family member that I can find this is the second tray, the first part of the third century. Compiled this tray then noticed that I'd forgotten to put in Trajan Decius (doh!).1 commentsmauseus

001c. Decimus BrutusDecimus Junius Brutus Albinus (27 April 81 BC – September 43 BC) was a supporter of Caesar, and Caesar reportedly was very fond of him, naming him a secondary heir in his will. Brutus was a very successful military commander He later was one of Caesar's assassins. He should not be confused with his relative Marcus Brutus (of much greater fame). In the later civil war, he fought against Mark Antony, but Octavian gave him little support. He was killed by a Gallic chief loyal to Mark Antony.

PHIL.jpg
037a. Philip I The ArabAugustus 244 - 249

Arab origin from Syria; son of an Arab chieftain who had attained Roman equestrian rank. Philip was the Praetorian Prefect under Gordian III and almost certainly engineered his fall. On Gordian's death, Philip was proclaimed emperor. He had good relations with the Senate. The major domestic event during his reign was the celebration of the 1,000th anniversary of the founding of Rome, for which he and his family struck a series of coins. He faced significant economic and border problems, to include having to deal with multiple usurpers. One of his generals, Trajan Decius, marched against him and in battle of Verona, Philip was killed either in battle or by own troops.

Q-001
"A similar coin, overstruck on an earlier denarius of Geta in Decius' operation to convert circulating denarii into antononiani, was shown on Forvm by Hispanorvm, May 2005.
I wrote the coin into my RIC, but it did not turn up in a Forvm search for "Hostilian Geta" now, so it has perhaps been deleted.
For readers without easy access to RIC, this rev. type is well known for Hostilian Caesar with the longer legend
C VALENS HOSTIL MES QVINTVS N C,
but is not in RIC with the more abbreviated legend of Quadrans' coin,
C VAL HOS MES QVINTVS N C." by Curtis Clay. Thank you Curtis Clay.
