Die engraver: Nicholas Briot
Nicholas Briot (c.1579–1646) was an innovative French coin engraver, medallist and mechanical engineer, who is credited with the invention of the coining-press. He emigrated to England in 1625 and in 1626 he was commissioned to make 'puncheons and dies' for the Coronation of Charles I. His Coronation Medal established his reputation and he went on to produce a considerable number of dies for medals and coins in the following years. In 1633, he was appointed chief engraver to the Royal Mint and went to Scotland to prepare and coin the coronation pieces of Charles I. These demonstrated both his artistic skill and the technical superiority of his new coining machinery and in 1635, on the death of Sir John Foulis, Briot was appointed Master of the Mint in Scotland and superintended the Scottish coinage for several years. Briot was then recalled to England by the King, and on the outbreak of the English Civil War he took possession of the coining apparatus at the Tower and had it removed 'for the purpose of continuing the coining operations in the cause of the King'. Briot travelled to France in the early 1640's and sent coining presses to his brother Isaac, now in a senior position at the Paris Mint, he died on Christmas Eve 1646.*Alex

01 Diocletian: Cyzicus antoninianus.Antoninianus; 284 - 295 AD, Cyzicus mint.
Obverse: IMP C C VAL DIOCLETIANVS AVG / Radiate bust of Diocletian.
Reverse: CONCORDIA MILITVM / Diocletian standing, holding sceptre, receiving globe (surmounted by Victory) from Jupiter, also standing and holding sceptre. E between them; XXI in exergue.
3.73 gm., 21 mm.
RIC #306; Sear #12635.
Attribution to Cyzicus: The CONCORDIA MILITVM reverse was used extensively by the mints at Siscia, Heraclea, Cyzicus, and Antioch. Siscia had only 3 officina (A B Γ), so that one can be eliminated. Heraclea and Antioch always use P F in the obverse legend (inscription #3), so those two can be eliminated. Pages 210 - 211 of RIC assign to Cyzicus coins with the word MILITVM broken between the I and L.Callimachus

1672, Prise de douze villes en HollandeObv. Draped and cuirassed bust right LVD MAG FRA ET NAV REX PP, CHERON on bust truncation.
Rev. The King in the guise of Sol, radiating light, seated right in a heavenly chariot pulled by three horses, surrounded by clouds. Around are aerlia views of twelve towns and forts captured in Holland SOLIS QVE LABORES on scroll above central design, the names of all twelve towns/forts around.
AE63. Engraved by Charles Jean Francois Cheron. ORIGINAL STRIKE, very rare.
Charles Jean Francois Cheron (1635-1698), one of the most distinguished artists of the school of Jean Warin, was born at Nancy and was trained by his father, Jean-Charles Cheron, engraver to Charles IV, Duke of Lorraine. Cheron went to Rome and became engraver of medals for Clement IX and Innocent X. Cheron's style in his Roman medals is of remarkable boldness, and his medals of Pope Clement IX and of Bernini are grandiloquent and among the finest Italian medals of the period. He returned to France in 1675 and was employed by Louis XIV at the Medal Mint at Paris for about twelve years, where he contributed several medals to the medallic series of the monarch, the Histoire Metallique. His medals are considered to be in an international baroque style.

"The false propaganda on the reverse is particularly ironic considering Valerian's fate. After years of war and great losses, Valerian arranged peace talks with the Sasanian Persian emperor Sapor. He set off with a small group to discuss terms and was never seen again. In Rome it was rumored that Sapor was using his stuffed body as a footstool."Randygeki(h2)

Notes: Historical issue celebrating the local Pythian Games in honor of Kabeiros at Thessalonica (not the Pythian Games at Delphi). But for this album I am sharing it for the extra-large incuse circular formation on the reverse.
While opinions long differed over the function of these "centration dimples" (or "centering divots" or "flan preparation marks") -- found on bronze coins of many Roman Provincial mints, some Ptolemaic bronzes, and a few other Greek types -- they are now generally accepted as having been using in the lathing of the flans prior to striking. The rotational marks sometimes seen inside the divots indicate they were used to center to the coin or apparatus while mechanically smoothing the flan. Whether any progress has been made in determining exactly what these apparatus looked like or how exactly they worked, I am unsure.
See Nurpetlian (NC 2018, p. 241, "central holes," & pl. 20, 17-19 [LINK]). A. Postumius Albinus. DenariusRRC 372/2
81 BC
Obverse: HISPAN, Veiled head of Hispania r
Reverse: ·S·N – ALBIN Togate figure standing l., raising hand; to l., legionary eagle and to r., fasces with axe.
Issued when Rome had won the supremacy in Italy but was still fighting the last of the Marians in Spain.
....and so the magistrate has been iddentified as the praetor Lucius Postumius Albinus who had gone to further Spain in 180 and had his term prorogued into 179. He fought two major battles with the Vaccaei, killing a reported 35,000. (....) If the magistrate on the coin is the victorious praetor, his century old triumph over the Lusitanians was especially relevant in 81, for ir was among the Lusitanians where Sertorius found the greatest support. (Harlan)
The moneyer is assumed to be a grandson of the consul of 110 and a son of the moneyer of 96 (Crawford)
