001x03. Juba(Circa 60-46 BC). Ae Unit. Obv: Head of Zeus Ammon right. Rev: Elephant standing right. CNP 453. 29 mm, 14.98 g. Naumann Auc 124, Lot 227.
Juba I was the King of Numidia and an ally of Pompey. When Julius Caesar sent forces to the area under command of Curio, the army of Juba annihilated the Romans. At the battle of Thapsus in 46 BC, Juba’s forces were present, but withdrew when they saw Scipio was losing. Fearing capture by the Caesarian forces, Juba entered into a pact with another senior officer and fought each other to the death. Juba won and then committed suicide.

The Remi were a Belgic people of north-eastern Gaul (Gallia Belgica). The Romans regarded them as a civitas, a major and influential polity of Gaul, The Remi occupied the northern Champagne plain, on the southern fringes of the Forest of Ardennes, between the rivers Mosa (Meuse) and Matrona (Marne), and along the river valleys of the Aisne and its tributaries the Aire and the Vesle.
Their capital was at Durocortum (Reims, France) the second largest oppidum of Gaul, on the Vesle. Allied with the Germanic tribes of the east, they repeatedly engaged in warfare against the Parisii and the Senones. They were renowned for their horses and cavalry.
During the Gallic Wars in the mid-1st century BC, they allied themselves under the leadership of Iccius and Andecombogius with Julius Caesar. They maintained their loyalty to Rome throughout the entire war, and were one of the few Gallic polities not to join in the rebellion of Vercingetorix.Arminius

Abraham Lincoln "Rail Splitter of the West" 1860 Political TokenObverse: HON. ABRAHAM LINCOLN above, 1860 below bust of Lincoln facing right, "ELLIS" on truncation of portrait.
Reverse: "THE RAIL SPLITTER OF THE WEST" above a depiction of Lincoln in the act of splitting a fence rail while another figure sits and watches. A log cabin appears in the background.
Medal is holed for suspension as made.
Sullivan-Dewitt: AL 1860-41
Brass, 28 mm
As noted by Jonathan H. Mann, publisher of The Rail Splitter - A Journal for the Lincoln Collector, "this token was part of a huge marketing campaign to shape Lincoln's image as the ideal American. "The "Rail Splitter" appellation refers to an early period in Lincoln's life when he toiled on the frontier, clearing the land, building a homestead. As a candidate for president in 1860, Lincoln campaigned as the 'Rail Splitter of the West,' a slogan and image that propelled him to the White House."Matt Inglima

Silver Hemiobol from CariaA tiny silver hemiobol from Caria, minted between 460-440 BC. 6.6 mm, .3 g. I was taken aback by the size when I first opened the package because I hadn't read the description carefully enough, but it has grown on me and is now one of my favorite coins.

Notes: Despite being in rough condition, one thing I love about this coin is the "horse tack" (i.e., gear used to train & ride horses). I especially like that you can see the very long "lead rope" trailing down to the ground, through the ethnic & between the horse's front & rear legs.
Thessalian coins are distinctive for oftentimes explicitly illustrating the activities and paraphernalia of horse training. In effect, these coins advertised not only their famous horses, but their equally famous horse training. Interestingly, to my amateur eye, this pony seems a bit unruly: its lead rope trails freely and it rears up. Has it gotten momentarily free from its trainer? (See also Mack's 2019 KOINON II article, discussing some other series at Larissa.)
