1929 Dime - Dark Toning~
~~
USA, 1929 'Mercury Dime'. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in Pennsylvania.
A gift from an elderly man I worked for who collected coins and was a professor of the classics at Princeton University. You can see quite a bit of good detail on this coin remaining, the dark toning kinda makes it less noticeable, but I really like this little guy!

1929D ALEXIUS AE TETARTERON S-1929 DOC 38 CLBC 2.4.5 Imitation OBV Bust of Christ, bearded and nimbate, wearing tunic and kolobion; holds gospels open in l. hand. Pellet in each limb of nimbus cross.

REV. Bust facing wearing stemma, divitision, and chlamys; holds in r. hand scepter cruciger, and in l. Globus cruciger.

Size 19.91mm
Weight 1.9gm

This is an imitation of Sear 1929, better to say it was not produced to the same standards as coins from the other mints. Interesting enough , imitations only seem to occur under Alexius rule and the Manuel's rule, I have never seen an imitation of John II coinage, that leaves me to believe these were authorized in some way by Alexius. Perhaps to help the introduction of the new coinage.

DOC lists 9 examples with weight s running from 1.82gm to 5.10gm and size from 18mm to 22mm

Rev: WILL / YOU HELP THE / SICK / REGAIN / THEIR / HEALTH, in six rows above and to left of a man in bed.

Ref: None known.

Note: Established in 1922 as a tuberculosis sanitarium, where many believed that the air in New Jersey’s Pine Barrens was therapeutic. When antibiotics eliminated tuberculosis in the late 1940s, the organization began to shift emphasis to treating heart diseases. In 1959 it changed its name to Deborah Hospital, and in 1973 it again changed its name to Deborah Heart and Lung Center, under which name it still operates in Brown’s Mills. It conducted a $1 million fund drive in 1929, and was apparently very active in fundraising thereafter.

Note: Minted by The Whitehead & Hoag Company, Newark, NJ (1880-1955).

Gustav Stresemann was probably Germany's most important statesman during the Weimar Republic. Under him, peace negotiations with France were initiated and he led Germany back into the community of nations. Together with Aristide Briand, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for this in 1926.
The gravestones indicate 4 missed opportunities:
(1) in the 1925 Locarno Treaty, Germany's western borders were guaranteed to France and the Belgians. The guarantor powers were Great Britain and Italy. The eastern borders remained disputed. Germany joined the League of Nations. In Germany, its policy of understanding was opposed as "treason", especially by the right-wing.
(2) Private talks between Stresemann and Briand took place in Thoiry following Locarno, in which bilateral treaties were agreed. These were rejected by Germany.
(3) The first meeting of the League of Nations with Germany took place in Geneva in 1926. Under the Nazis, Germany withdrew from it again.
(4) In 1929, the Young Plan was signed in The Hague, which limited Germany's reparations payments. Under the Nazis, interest payments were suspended. The last payment was made by Germany in October 2010(sic!).
