1794 Undated AE Halfpenny Token. Bath, Somerset.Obverse: IOHN HOWARD F•R•S• HALFPENNY•. Bust of John Howard facing left.
Reverse: REMEMBER THE DEBTORS IN GOAL (sic) ✤. A female figure, the personification of Benevolence, seated facing left, a variety of vessels at her feet and beside her. She is holding a laurel-branch in her left arm and pointing towards a building with a barred window (Ilchester Prison) directing the small figure of a cherub or a child carrying a key to open the prison doors. "GO FORTH" in small letters emanating amid rays from the sky above the small figure.
Edge: PAYABLE AT LONDON OR DUBLIN • + • + • +.
Diameter 29mm | Die Axis 6

Thomas Wyon engraved the dies for this token and it was manufactured by William Lutwyche at his works in Birmingham. Lutwyche, besides being a major supplier of genuine tokens, is also known to have made large amounts of spurious coin.
This token was struck in the name of John Howard, who was an expert in prisons and published the book "The State of the Prisons in England & Wales" in 1777, but he did not issue it. The token was issued by William Gye, born in 1750, who worked in his father’s printing works at 4 Westgate Buildings, Bath, before opening an establishment at 13 Market Place. He was an active and successful printer and bookseller, and sometime publisher of the “Bath Courant”, he was highly respected for his attempts to improve the conditions of the city’s poor. His greatest philanthropic endeavours were connected with the relief of the prisoners in the county gaol at Ilchester, which he visited every week with food, clothing and money. He issued trade tokens, and when they were redeemed in his shop, it was his custom to point out the inscription on them (“Remember the debtors”) in order to elicit donations. He died of an apoplectic fit in 1802, and was remembered for his ‘strict integrity and unblemished reputation’. His wife Mary, whom he had married in 1774, inherited his printing and stationery business. Mary managed the business herself before it was passed on to the couple's third son, Henry.*Alex

Gold "Kanthirava" fanam, ca.1650, Dutch VOC company, Southern IndiaNarasimha in the "Yogabhanda" post holding a chakra and a sankh / Degraded Nagari inscription "Sri Kamthi Rava", with the letter "OC" (from VOC?) visible in the middle line. 6mm, 0.34 grams. KM 212; Herrli #6.03.01 . SKU 42274
The coins with a visible letters "OC" in the central line are generally attributed to the Dutch VOC company. The Kanthirava (or "Narasimha") fanams were first minted by the Kanthirava Narasa Raa Wodeyar (1638-1659) of Mystore. His successors in Mysore kept minting these coins without any design changes until the state fell in 1761. The Dutch also issued this type in Pulicat (until ca.1750) and in Tuticorin (from ca.1658 to 1759), the British EIC issued this type in Madras in the 17th and 18th century. After the death of Tipu Sultan in Mysore, this type was again issued in Mysore by the Wodeyar rulers. There is also some evidence that many petty rulers on the Coromandel coast issued Narasimha fanams as well. All these issues are very similar, though dozens of small varieties do exist. Unfortunately, we do not know enough about them to distinguish between the different issues and attribute them to a certain ruler or period, though some coins might show the Dutch VOC initials on the reverse.

About VF
A note about attribution: Heritage described this lot as cf. RIC 425-unlisted variety. SEP-T AVG IMP III PP as the obverse legend as an issue of the Emesa Mint. After studying the coin in hand, I do not think that that is correct. It appears that the legend itself on the obverse seems to not have PP at the end and as far as I can tell that legend of SEP-T AVG IMP III PP does not exist. The lettering is crude (and the coin is also worn) and P's and R's (admittedly) on this coin barely differentiate themselves from I's. See the "R" on the reverse in VICTOR. But, given the lack of existence of SEP-T AVG IMP III, and based on what I can make out of the remainder of the legend's beginning, I think the most likely candidate for the obverse legend is L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP VIII, which places this issue at Laodicea ad Mare and is well known as RSC 485.

Third_RIC 20varThis is one of my dearest coins because of its pedigree. It is originally from the poet Apostolo Zeno´s collection (1668-1750). Zeno was one of the main names behind the creation of modern opera librettos. His coin collection ended up in the St. Florian Augustinian monastery close to Linz in Austria. The collection was sold in the 50s to pay for necessary repairs and it was auctioned by Dorotheum. Every time I look at this coin I get shivers thinking it lay in the cabinet while the great composer, Anton Bruckner as the organist of the monastery, played the magnificent instrument there.
2.98 gr, die-axis 6.
And now, for a while, it is in my posession. jmuona
