Youth on horseback right, holding patera in his right hand and turning his head slightly to left; to left, Nike flying right, crowning him with wreath.
Rev. Youthful oikist riding dolphin right, holding cornucopiae on his right hand and trident below his left arm; to left, monogram ΙΩΠ.
HN Italy 1043. Vlasto 926 (same dies). Extremely rare, Vlasto knew a single example. Some areas of weaknes and a few light marks and scratches, otherwise, very fine.

From an American collection, ex Rauch 110, 2 July 2020, 21.

This extremely rare variety, known to Vlasto from a single obverse die (925-926) and a single reverse die (926), is among the rarest Tarentine nomoi of the late period and, as the author points out, the dies are of remarkably 'charming style', especially for the period.

NOT_IN_RIC_RAREObv.: IVLIA MAMAEA AVG; Bust of Julia Mamaea, diademed, right
Rev.: VESTA; Vesta, draped, seated left, holding simpulum in right hand and sceptre in left hand

Very rare emission. Unpublished in the standard references consulted. There is at least one other piece known sold by Roma Numismatics (e-sale 38, 29 July 2017, 659). As Roma Numismatics claims "There are three recorded Vesta types struck in the name of Julia Mamaea (cf. RIC 360, 362 and 364). This previously unknown Vesta type may belong to the small number of coins produced for issue 8, which were produced early in AD 228 before being replaced by a second issue of new types, thus explaining the appearance of the type only now." Coin with some porosity but fully readable coin.

Vespasian struck a massive bronze issue in 71 which easily dwarfs any other of the reign. The issue is dominated by the Judaea Capta series, but many other important themes are employed by the mint. This Fortuna reverse carries an important propaganda message concerning the safe return of the imperial household. Mattingly in BMCRE explains it as 'the Fortuna who brings Titus home in June 71; the branch which she holds, beside her own rudder and cornucopiae, is either the olive branch of Pax or the laurel of the home-returning conqueror.' Titus had been absent from Rome completing the successful siege of Jerusalem and was en route home in Spring 71. This example is a rare variant bust left (all Vespasian's sestertii with left busts are indeed quite scarce). Interestingly, the left facing sestertius portraits are engraved in a different style than the corresponding right facing ones.

Wonderful fine style and superb EF condition. Cayón 39 (this coin).

Special thanks to Curtis Clay for the additional provenance information.

Acquired from Marti Numismatics, September 2020. Ex Jean Elsen Auction 144, 14 March 2020, lot 526.

This iconic sestertius struck during the great bronze issue of 71 advertises Vespasian's ambitions to repair both the great financial burden and physical devastation Rome had suffered from the recent Civil War and Nero's great fire of 64. Vespasian is shown extending a hand to raise the kneeling personification of the city of Rome while the goddess Roma looks on with approval in the background. Suetonius tells us 'Rome was unsightly because of earlier fires and collapsed buildings...Having undertaken the restoration of the Capitol, he (Vespasian) was the first to set his hands to clearing away the rubble and carried it off on his own shoulders.' It would cost nearly 400 million aueri to set things right and put the city and the empire on sound footing. The 'Resurgence of Rome' announces the beginning of the bold plan to do so, which in hindsight was quite successful. The completion of the temple of Claudius, the rebuilding of the Capitol, the construction of the temple of Peace, and the building of the Colosseum all attest to Vespasian's success at achieving his goal.

Ironically, despite the importance of the reverse's message, these ultra-rare ROMA RESVRGES sestertii were struck from only one die pair and could not have been produced in very large numbers. Also of note, the drapery on Vespasian's left shoulder marks this coin as part of a special issue (the vast majority of his portraits are unadorned). Remarkably, this same exact scene was used for a reverse with the legend LIBERTAS RESTITVTA, probably produced by the same engraver.

Many examples of this type seen in trade are actually Paduan aftercasts in poor condition and are mistakenly(?) presented as ancient coins.

Fantastic portrait with beautiful dark olive patina. No tooling or smoothing!

Obv: IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG COS III; Head of Vespasian, radiate, r.
Rev: TVTELA AVGVSTI; S C in exergue; Tutela std. l., with a child either side
RIC 282 (R2). BMC 596. BNC 572.
Acquired from Praefectus Coins, July 2019. Ex The Morris Collection. Formerly in NGC holder 4632640-020, grade 'Ch VF', strike 5/5, surface 3/5.

Tutela, the goddess of guardianship, is a rare personification on Roman coinage. She first appears on the dupondii of Vitellius and later under Vespasian during his great bronze issue of 71, both on the dupondius and a unique sestertius. The type under Vespasian is extremely scarce with only two reverse dies known for the dupondius. The unique sestertius was acquired by Curtis Clay, for which he wrote the following concerning the TVTELA reverse type:

'Cohen suggested a dynastic interpretation of this TVTELA AVGVSTI rev. type: Vitellius seated with his two children, one boy and one girl, under Vitellius; Domitilla, Vespasian's deceased wife, seated with her sons Titus and Domitian under Vespasian.

Mattingly, in BMC, p. xliv, modified Cohen's interpretation: "Cohen can hardly be right in identifying the woman with Domitilla, but the children seem to stand for Titus and Domitian, and Tutela is the guardian care of the Emperor that watches over his sons."

However, I prefer Mattingly's alternate interpretation, which he explains in a footnote:

"Or the children might represent citizens and Tutela would then be the Emperor's ward over his subjects. Cf. Suetonius, Divus Vespasianus, 5, an omen that portended 'desertam rem p. civili aliqua perturbatione in tutelam eius ac velut in gremium deventuram' ['that the Roman state, abandoned because of some civil agitation, would fall under his protection (tutela) and as it were into his lap']....Martial (v.1.7ff.) addresses Domitian as 'o rerum felix tutela salusque / sospite quo gratum credimus esse Iovem' [O happy protector (tutela) and savior of our affairs, whose continuing good health makes us believe that Jupiter is on our side']."

These quotes, and others that Mattingly indicates in the same note, show that 'tutela' was commonly used in Vespasian's day to mean the emperor's solicitous care for his subjects. Plus, the few later appearances of a Tutela type on Roman coins, under Tetricus I and Carausius, do not include children and seem to refer to governing not childrearing.
'

As can clearly be seen on this well preserved dupondius the two children standing either side of Tutela are togate, indicating that they are both boys and perhaps can be viewed as further evidence that Mattingly's alternate theory is correct and the two children do indeed represent the empire's citizens. Unfortunately, the Tutela type was struck rather fleetingly in 71 and did not become part of Vespasian's regular canon of reverse types.

One of the finest known examples of the type. A double die match with the ANS specimen 1906.236.246.

NB: BMC 527 records the type with an obverse reading COS II, however, the obverse has been tooled from an original COS III die. Its reverse die is also known to be paired with other COS III obverses.

There was a tremendous amount of denarii struck for Domitian in the last few months of 81 after he became emperor in mid September, probably for donatives to the legions. The early coinage of Domitian continues in the same style as those struck under Titus using many of his pulvinaria reverse types. This reverse featuring a throne with a semi-circular frame decorated with three crescents is a fairly rare variant of the type, missing from both the BM and Paris collections. The slight rainbow toning adds a touch of charm to the piece.

A common early Pax type struck in 72 unique to Lyon. H. Mattingly in BMCRE writes 'The type of Pax sacrificing, which is peculiar to Lugdunum, conveys the thought of thanksgiving for peace and prosperity (cp. the caduceus held by Pax) restored.' At Rome a similar variant was produced sans altar. The propaganda value of Pax for the new Flavian dynasty after the Civil War and Jewish Rebellion cannot be underestimated.

Good Lugdunese style in good metal.

Unlike most of the later Ephesian groups, the Group 1 denarii lack mint marks. Fourth known specimen, missing from all the major collections. The type was completely unknown until the first specimen surfaced at auction in 1998 (Schenk-Behrens 76, 26 Nov. 1998, lot 186 - the lone example cited by RIC).

An iconic dynastic type struck during Titus' fairly large bronze issue of 80-81. Mattingly in BMCRE II succinctly sums up the reverse: "A type of 'Providentia Augusti' shows Vespasian, now a god, handing over to Titus the 'regimen orbis', symbolized by a globe over a rudder. 'Providentia' is the virtue of wise foresight, which leads an Emperor to make the succession sure." This bit of imperial propaganda must have been extremely important to the new regime based on the commonness of the type. It was very important for Titus as the new princeps to show continuity with his father's policies. The powerful symbolism of Vespasian handing over 'the rudder of the world' to Titus is a brilliant piece of visual storytelling. This right facing portrait is slightly rarer than the left facing variant.

In 85 Domitian struck a fairly impressive issue of sestertii, M. Grant hyperbolically called it the most 'ambitious' of any one reign or year. The series is the first major aes issue of Domitian's reign and is dominated by panoramic types commemorating his military victory over the Germanic tribe the Chatti. The details of the war are unclear, but the overall impression is that the conflict was a minor affair blown out of proportion by an emperor eager for military glory. No large battles, a la Mons Graupius, have come down to us, prompting Tacitus' assertion, 'that in recent times, the Germans were more triumphed over than conquered'. Consequently, Domitian's Germanic triumph of 83 received a certain amount of ridicule from ancient writers who thought the whole thing was a sham (Dio goes so far as to say Domitian raided the palace's furniture stores for his fake spoils!), no doubt the numismatic propaganda for the victory was likely viewed in the same manner by contemporary senatorial elites. Germania Capta types were first struck in silver in 84 and in bronze in 85. This iconic Germania Capta sestertius strongly echoes Vespasian's Judaea Capta types - but instead of a palm tree we see a trophy which appears to be mounted on a palm trunk(?). H. Mattingly writes in BMCRE 'the type is closely modelled on the Judaea Capta of Vespasian, but the German element is indicated by the heavy angular cloak worn by the man and by the oblong shields.' Comparing the two triumphs, the Josephian scholar Steve Mason remarked - 'The same people who produced Flavian Triumph I: Judaea were on hand for Flavian Triumph II: Germania, and sequels are rarely as good as the originals.'

The Germania Capta commemorative sestertii were produced for only a few short years between 85-88. The present example from the second issue of 85 is probably the most common variant of the type struck just before Domitian was awarded the perpetual censorship.

Fine style and nicely toned.

All the denarii from Domitian's sixth issue of 85 are extremely rare. It is the first denarius issue which marks Domitian's assumption of the perpetual censorship (CENS P). Of note, both obv. and rev. legends are riddled with spacing dots, a trademark of these issues.

In 88 AD Domitian struck a brief special issue of Minerva denarii with abbreviated legends and austere reverse designs. The reverses feature a shortened legend across field (here just the COS date) instead of the usual full legend begging from the lower left. All the coins from the issue are quite scarce, likely owing to the brief time span in which they were produced. RIC cites one lone example from Berlin. Perhaps the issue was struck in conjunction with a special event that year (the Secular Games?) and are commemorative in nature. Regardless, the mint soon returned the denarius to its conventional Minerva arrangement, hinting that these scarce issues were indeed struck for a special occasion.

Fine style and well centred.

This coin records the brave deeds of the moneyer's ancestor and namesake, Quintus Minucius Thermus who was elected consul in 193 and waged war against the Ligurians, defeating their forces near Pisa. He remained as proconsul in Liguria for 191–190. During this time it appears that he may have won the distinction of the corona civica, the second highest military award to which a Roman could aspire, by saving the life of a fellow citizen in battle through slaying an enemy on a spot not further held by the enemy army that day - this act being depicted on the reverse.

He may also have been the same Thermus who served as military tribune under Scipio in North Africa in 202 BC. Appian relates that about this time there was a cavalry engagement between the forces of Hannibal and those of Scipio near Zama, in which the latter had the advantage. Scipio, learning that Hannibal was short of supplies and was expecting a convoy, sent the military tribune, [Quintus Minucius] Thermus, by night to attack the supply train. Thermus took a position on the crest of a hill at a narrow pass, where he killed 4,000 Africans, took as many more prisoners, and brought the supplies to Scipio.

They included Cybele (mother of the Gods), Venus (Goddess of beauty & love) and here with Diana as the moon-goddess Luna Lucifera, ‘the light-bearing moon’, who is commanding a biga of horses. Septimius Severus had himself issued coins associating himself with the sun-god Sol, and so by identifying themselves in this way Domna and Severus emphasise the eternal nature of the imperial house. Luna Lucifera only appears with her own name on the coins of Domna and Gallienus with issues appearing in gold, silver and bronze.

One aspect of the coinage of Julia Domna I find particularly fascinating is in the evolution of her portraits over time...in her earlier years she appears as an attractive young woman, and towards the end of her career she is shown as a rather stern looking scowling old crone. I guess that could be where her son Caracalla got his scowl from...

‘He squealed harshly, hot foam streaming over his broad shoulders, and his tusks were as long as an elephant’s. Flames came out of his mouth, and the leaves were burnt up by his breath’ (Metamorphoses 8.284-9).

On the obverse of this handsome denarius is a portrait of Diana, goddess of the hunt, sporting her trademark bow and quiver. The reverse features the giant Calydonian boar of classical Greek myth, wounded by a spear and being attacked by a hound half it’s size. The ferocious boar was sent by Diana as retribution after King Oienus of Calydon forgot to include her in his annual sacrifical offerings to the gods. Oienus called for help from the best hunters in Greece, and many of the famous heroes of the generation before the Trojan war responded, including Oienus’ own son Meleager, some of the Argonauts, the Dioscuri and the huntress (and only woman) Atalanta.

Many of the men refused to hunt alongside a woman, but Meleager, who had taken a shine to the huntress, convinced them. It was Atalanta that drew the first blood, whilst Meleager finished the job off. He presented her with the trophies of the hunt, and this stirred up feelings of discontent that the prize should go to a girl. Meleager’s two uncles got in on the act and stole the spoils, causing Meleager to kill them in a fit of rage. This led to Meleager’s mother Althaea, whose brothers had just been murdered, seeking revenge - even if it meant killing her own son. It had been prophesized at Meleager’s birth that he would live only so long as a log then burning in the family hearth should last. Althaea had removed it from the fire and kept it hidden for years in the hope of preserving her son’s life. Until now. She threw the log back onto the fire, thus ending Meleager’s life as it was consumed. Diana had finally had her revenge against King Oienus.

One of the most famous depictions of the hunt is found on the François Vase, a large krater of Athenian workmanship dated to circa 570 BC.

As for Hosidius, there is little known about the moneyer responsible for this issue. There is no mention of the Hosidii in Rome prior to it’s appearance on these coins, but there is reference to the family name in inscriptions from a town on the coast of Italy called Histonium (present day Vasto). Indeed, there may be links between this town and the myth of the Calydonian boar; via Diomedes, one of the heroes of the Trojan war, and the founder of Histonium according to legend. Therefore Hosidius likely chose to depict a legend that was well known and important to the people of his home town.

This is without a doubt one of my favourites in my collection. It's a particularly well centred example with wonderful toning.

Notes from Andrew McCabe: "I purchased this coin due to the really exceptional speared boar and dog on the reverse and the very large flan, but later found an example from the collection of Benjamin Nightingale, a well-known 19th century antiquarian. My new coin has a less cute boar, but I had to choose between provenance and art."
