D.609 Louis the Pious (denier, Melle, class 2)Louis the Pious, king of the Franks and Holy Roman emperor (813-840)
Denier (Melle, class 2, 819-822)

Silver, 1.48 g, 20 mm diameter, die axis 3 h

O/ +HLVDOVVICVS IMP; cross pattée
R/ META / . / LLVM

Louis' deniers correspond to his father's (Charles the Great) ``novus denarius'', whose weight is supposed to be near 1.7 g with a certain variability.

This denier is typical of Class 2 of Louis' coinage (819-822).
A circular inscription of the name of the ruler surrounds a cross pattée on the observe. The quite surprising Hlvdovvicvs initially comes from the germanic name Chlodowig ("Clovis"). This one was first transcribed to latin as Chlodowicvs. The initial C then disappeared, which explains the H at the beginning. The w(=vv) finally became a standard v, which gave Lvdovicvs (Louis). The imperial title imp is also given.

The reverse consists of the mint name, in field. The mint name may be split in 2 or 3 lines.

Simon Coupland: Unlike the Christiana religio coins of Charles the Bald, bearing a temple on the reverse, which survive in large numbers and were struck at several mints, these monogram Christiana religio coins in the name of a king Charles are known in small numbers and were probably the product of a single mint. The hoard evidence indicates that they are coins of Charles the Simple, minted in the early tenth century, and suggests that they may well have been minted at Langres. They have namely turned up in just two hoards, Langres 1880, which contained no fewer than seven specimens alongside a GDR denier of Langres itself, and Neufchâteau 2008, discovered less than 60 km from Langres. Confederate States of America: T-41 1862 $100 (Back)Cuhaj, George S. (2012-11-30). Confederate States Paper Money

Obv: Slaves hoeing cotton. John C. Calhoun at left, Columbia at right. The central design is copied from the $ 50 note of 1861 (No. 1). The scrolls in the upper corners come in two different styles, vertical and horizontal. Black with “Hundred” in orange/ red.
Rev: Blank

Various written dates August 1862 to January 8, 1863. Plain and watermarked paper (CSA block, CSA script, J Whatman 1862, Hodgkinson & Co. Wookey Hole Mill). The J Whatman 1862 and Hodgkinson & Co. watermarks are scarcer. The scroll varieties are of approximately the same value.

Over 70 plate letter (W to Z), scroll, date and paper varieties. If frame line varieties are included, the number increases considerably. An example of the CSA block watermark shows through the back of the $ 100 note pictured below.

All of the $ 100 interest-bearing notes generally bear interest paid markings on the back, usually straight line type with or without a rectangular border. Prices are listed for this type. Markings of certain cities that are infrequently seen are worth somewhat more. Notes bearing postmarks on the back are worth double or more (Charleston, S.C. is the most common) while other circular depository markings raise value of notes up to 25%. Notes bearing Army or Navy markings on back are worth triple. Some notes bear no markings on reverse, but they command little over the listed prices. Notes with printed bogus backs, which are described in Part II of this catalog, are worth about double in nice condition. Thian gives a total of 670,400 notes of this type, a figure that appears to be greater than it should be for this type since it is somewhat scarcer than the train types, although all are common.

O: Haunted-appearing (almost ghostly) face (?Christ)
R: Hound or wolf standing with curled tail

This unusual sceatta was probably produced in Kent or East Anglia, and the bearded face is probably Christ. The reverse is a skinny quadriped, with a curled tail circling through its legs.

The origin of this design seems to have heavy Roman and Byzantine influences. The obverse bust parallels similar images of Christ found on contemporary Byzantine coins and Christian tokens that pilgrims would have brought back from the Holy Land. The face has a fairly haunted appearance, and is expressionless.

The reverse is a little more tricky. Anna Gannon (Coins, Images, and Tales from the Holy Land, in Studies in Early Medieval Coinage vol 2) suggests that it represents a stag, which would have had a religious meaning. In my opinion, however, even with the primitive art of the time, it's hard to call that a stag, as the small linear "horns" really look more like ears. Other scholars call the creature a hound or wolf, with origins in Celtic imagery (such as the "Norfolk wolf", which is also of East Anglian origin). Alternatively it has been suggested (Charles Wood, private correspondence) that the creature might be a crude copy of the Roman wolf, nursing Romulus and Remus, as appears on many earlier Roman coins. This imagery occurs on a later East Anglian coin, that of Aethelberht II. The East Anglian ruling dynasty in the 7th century was the Wuffingas, a name that probably means "kin of wolves", and the wolf may have been a representation of the dynasty.

This coin probably dates from the early 8th century. The legends are illegible, and could be erroneous copies of Greek, of which the Anglo-Saxons would have presumably known little.
