09. Geta.Tetradrachm, 204 AD, Antioch.
Obverse: KAICAP ΓETAC / Bust of Geta.
Reverse: VΠATOC AΠOΔEΔEIΓ / Eagle standing on leg & thigh of animal.
11.84 gm., 25 mm.
Bellinger #5; Prieur #196.

The reverse legend translates as "consul designatus." Since Geta became consul for the first time in 205, the reverse legend dates this coin to the year 204. Prieur knew of only 4 examples of this coin when he published his book in 2000.

RSC #220a; RIC unlisted.

This coin is a mule, and as such it is a very rare coin. A mule is a coin struck from dies that are normally not used together. In this case, an earlier obverse die with an earlier legend was used with the VICTORIAE BRIT reverse. The obverse legend should read P SEPT GETA PIVS AVG BRIT and is listed that way as RIC #91. Roman Silver Coins (Seaby) lists this mule as #220a based on two offerings of apparently the same specimen in Seaby's Bulletin in 1950 and 1952, not illustrated either time. (Thanks to Curtis Clay for this information.)

This piece was minted in the name of Geta, who served as Caesar under Septimius Severus from 198-209 AD. The reverse features Castor, patron of the knights. Castor and Pollux are better known together as The Dioscuri, and their specific depiction individually is very infrequently seen. Geta was the second Castor in his coins.

Geta was killed in late December 211. His memory was condemned, his name removed from inscriptions, his face removed from sculptures and paintings. Official restoration of Geta's reputation came with the arrival of the emperor Elagabalus to Rome in 219, when Geta's remains were translated into the Mausoleum of Hadrian to join those of his father and brother.
Janus was the Roman god of doors, and of beginnings and endings. Of course, the month we know today as January was also named for Janus.

"Oineus, king of Kalydon in Aitolia, once had feasted the gods at an harvest festival but forgotten to butcher an animal for Artemis. The goddess was enraged and sent a big boar who wasted the fertile fields of the king. Oineus called for help and from all parts of Greece the heroes came to help him. There were the Curetes from Pleuron, the brothers of Althaia, the wife of Oineus. There were the Dioscurs Kastor and Polydeikes and their Messenian cousins Idas and Lynkeus. Theseus came from Athens, Iphikles, half-brother of Herakles, came from Thebens, Iason, Admetos, Peirithos, Peleus and Eurytion came from Thessalia, Telamon from Salamis, Amphiaraos from Argos, Ankaios and Atalante from Arcadia and much more. Herakles was prevented by his labours. On top of the heroes stood Meleagros, the son of Oineus and Althaia.
The hunt for the Calydonean boar ended very disastrous. Many heroes lost their lifes. Ankaios was the first killed by the boar. Peleus accidentally hit his father-in-law Eurytion with his spear. A second hunter too was killed by the boar.
The big catastrophe happened at the 6th day of the hunt. On this day Atalanta hit the boar with her arrow and Meleagros gave him the deathblow. Then he awarded head and skin of the boar to Atalante. But his uncles, brother of his mother Althaia, didn't tolerate that. They insisted on the rights of their clan. A dispute occured, they snatched the trophies from Atalante and then a fight began in which Meleagros slew his uncles. When Meleagros was born the fates predicted that he will live only as long as the log in the oven. Althaia pulled it out of the fire and hid it in a secret place. When she heard of the death of her brothers she enraged, got the log and threw it in the fire. When it was burnt Meleagros break down dead when he was dissecting the boar." - Jochen's Coins of mythological interest

Caracalla, sestertius of AD 210, two emperors crowned by VictoriesObv.: M AVREL ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate bust of Caracalla facing right.
Rev.: CONCORDIAE AVGG (around) S C (in ex.), Caracalla and Geta clasping hands above tripod altar, both holding spears, each crowned by Victory.
RIC -; Cohen -
ex Henzen (1995, "found during dredging in Lagliari harbour, Sardinia" ).
The reverse has been badly double struck but the representation can clearly be seen.

This type is not listed in RIC nor Cohen. Cohen reports a medallion of Caracalla with the same reverse representation. The same reverse is listed in RIC, Cohen and BMC but only for Geta and Septimius Severus. Another related type is listed in RIC 459 (R2) and Cohen 28: Caracalla and Geta clasping hands and holding spears, being crowned by Apollo and Hercules, minted A.D. 210.

A sestertius of Caracalla with the same reverse was in the Santamaria sale of 1938 but was overlooked for inclusion in RIC. It was purchased by Curtis Clay in 1967 and is in the British Museum since 1993. Thus this coin is the second specimen known of this type for Caracalla.
Curtis Clay noted that the obv. and rev. dies of this specimen are both different from the Santamaria-BM specimen. The rev. die was entirely new to him and unknown in combination with a Geta obv. either; the obv. die of this coin is known with TR P XIII (thus dating this coin to AD 210): three emps. sacrificing rev. dies, one being BMC pl. 62.1. (That BM coin has been tooled, and the tribunician number altered to XIIII.).

Geta (as Augustus), 209–11 CEAR denarius, Rome mint, 210 CE; 19mm, 3.11g, 6h; BM —, CRB —, RIC —, RSC —. Obv: P SEPT GETA PIVS AVG BRIT; laureate bust right. Rx: VICTORI – AE BRIT; Victory seated left on shields, holding shield on right knee and palm. Commemorates victories declared in Britain. Very rare mule; CNG states, “this reverse type is unknown on coins of Geta. It is known, however, for aurei of Caracalla (RIC IV 174). As the reverse die is worn, it is possible that the minters felt the die was too deteriorated to continue producing aurei, but sufficient for striking denarii.” According to Curtis L. Clay, “only one other is known to me, in my collection, from different dies, much less fine, ex Gitbud & Naumann, eBay, 19 March 2011.”
