Crusafont reported two coins of this type found in Sevilla, Spain. He suggested that they may be of Visigothic origin, but concluded that the type can not be attributed with any certainty.

Childebert I, Frankish King of Paris, Merovingian DynastyChildebert I (c. 497-558), Merovingian dynasty, Frankish king of Paris (511-558) and Orleans (524-558). Æ (14 mm, 0.81 g). Obverse: EL/DEBER/TIR (first R retrograde) in three lines. Reverse: chi-rho. Prou 36, Belfort 5454.

The coin type may have been minted in Marseille after 536. Witiges, king of the Ostrogoths, ceded Provence to the Franks in 535. The possession of Arles and Marseilles was guaranteed to Childebert by his brothers and the annexation of the province was completed in the winter of 536–537. The type with the king's name and title in three or more lines resembles contemporary Ostrogothic coins.

Honorius_ab.jpg
Honorius (RIC X 1355)Honorius (384-423), Roman Emperor (393-395) and Western Roman emperor (395-423). Æ (15 mm, 2.16 g), Rome 408-423. Obverse: DN HONORI-VS P F AVG. Reverse: GLORIA RO-MANORVM, (SMRP) in exergue, Emperor standing right with head left, his right hand on the head of a kneeling captive, his left hand extended over a suppliant. RIC X 1355, S.

The type with the emperor suppressing a captive and raising a suppliant would be appropriate to the euphoria of 418 after the treaty with the Goths, ceding to them the south-western part of Gaul in a sort of feudal subordination to the empire of the West (RIC X).

Honorius (RIC X 1361)Honorius (384-423), Roman Emperor (393-395) and Western Roman emperor (395-423). Æ (1.63 g, 13 mm), minted in Lugdunum (Lyon) 411-423. Obverse: (DN H)ONORI-VS PF AVG. Reverse: GLORIA R-OVMAVM, emperor standing facing, head to right, holding standard and resting left hand on shield, LV(G) in exergue. Reverse legend GLORIA R-OMANORVM invariably garbled according to RIC X. RIC X 1361 (R4), LRBC 399.

Last Roman issue from Lugdunum. Bastien (1987) has suggested a date between the usurpations of Constantine III and Jovinus, while Kent (RIC X) suggests that the type is best placed in Honorius's later years when southern Gaul had been reorganized and was enjoying a temporary respite from invasions.

Theoderic_nummus2_ab~0.jpg
Odovacar - RomeOdovacar (also Odoacer, Odovacer, Odoacre) (c. 433-493), king of Italy (476-493). Æ (11 mm, 1.01 g). In the name of Zeno. Obverse: head right, reverse: monogram. References: Morello 21 var; not in RIC.

I tentatively attribute this coin to Odovacar rather than to other suggested rulers including Theoderic, Baduila and Gundobad. Three coins with this monogram have been sold at auctions (Sternberg 23, Lot 1049, 2000; Gemini VII, Lot 889, 2011; CNG 88, Lot 1761, 2011). The latter two have visible obverse legends DN Z(…) and (…)ENO P, which shows that they were minted in the name of Zeno. The monogram consists of the letters D, V, A and R and it is similar to Morello’s monogram No. 21 attributed to Odovacar. The letter O is apparently missing, or is perhaps incorporated into the upper part of the R. The design of the reverse including the thick wreath is similar to that on nummi by Julius Nepos (RIC X 3222) and I would place this coin during an early phase of Odovacar’s reign.

Baduila_lion_ab3.jpg
Baduila - Rome - 2 or 2 1/2 nummiBaduila (-552), Ostrogothic king (541-552). Æ 2 or 2½ Nummi (10 mm, 0.82 g), minted in Rome 550-552. Obverse: frontal bust with helmet, DN BA-DVIL. Reverse: lion advancing right within wreath. Metlich 99.

The type with a lion on the reverse copies the preceeding denarius (MIBE 232) from the Rome mint, which may have been introduced by the Roman general Belisarius in connection with the ludi saeculares of the city in 547; the 1300th anniversary of Rome's foundation. The type was continued to be used after Baduila captured Rome in January 550 and it may be related to the circus games that he is known to have presented in the city.

Visigoths in Gaul (RIC X 3703)Visigoths in Gaul, circa 415-423 (Athaulf - Theodoric I), AR siliqua (13mm, 0.99 g). Minted in Narbonne(?), Gaul. Obverse: D N HONORI-VS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: [VICTOR] IA AVGG, Roma seated left on cuirass, holding Victory on globe and spear; PSRV in exergue. RIC X 3703, rare.

After sacking Rome in 410 the Visigoths settled in southern Gaul. The successive kings of the Visigoths were Athaulf (410-415), Sigeric (415, only seven days), Wallia (415-419), and Theodoric I (419-451). The Visigoths minted issues in the name of Priscus Attalus (RIC X 3701-2) around 415 during an attempt to resurrect their candidate for Western emperor. Kent (NC 149 [1989], pp. i-xvi) dated the present related issue to circa 418-423 when the Visigoths made peace with Honorius and became official foederati.

This type is represented in the museums in Rome (x2) and Copenhagen (x3), and in the Massafra hoard (Hahn, 1987).

Baduila_DN_REX_B.jpg
Baduila - Ticinum - 2 or 2 1/2 nummiBaduila (-552), Ostrogothic king (541-552). Æ 2 or 2½ Nummi (8 mm, 0.82 g), Ticinum. Obverse: bust right, [DN ANASTAS]IVS. Reverse: D N REX/B in two lines. Metlich 95b.

This type is believed to have been introduced after the one with Baduila's monogram. It was also introduced before the reopening of the mint in Rome by the Ostrogoths in 549/550. The Fontana Liri hoard contains coins of this type, but not the type with a lion on the reverse that is attributed to Rome (Metlich).

Justinian_ab.jpg
Justinian I - RomeJustinian I (527-565). Æ denarius (9 mm, 0.63 g), Rome mint c. 537-546. Obverse: (I)VSTINI-ANVS, diademed bust right. Reverse: Latin version of Justinian's monogram within wreath. Undescribed, similar to MIBE 94 (Rome); Sear 340 (uncertain mint).

I have not found an earlier description of this monogram. It is similar to MIBE 94, which has the same form except that the S is placed below instead of above. The monogram is also similar to those of Athalaric and Theodahad on 2½ nummi minted in Rome 526-536. This type of "A" in the monogram is not found on coins from Ravenna. The byzantine army lead by Belisarius entered Rome in December 536 unopposed by the Ostrogoths. Rome was later besieged and occupied by Baduila in 546 and again reoccupied by Belisarius in 547. In addition, the frontal bust was introduced on Italian copper coins in the late 540s. These facts combined suggest that this coin was minted in Rome during the period from about 537 to 546. Hahn suggests that MIBE 94 belongs to the mid-540s.
