* references and attribution copied from forvm ancient coins catalog * Description of Hermanubis from Numiswiki

Anubis, represented as a jackal or as a man with the head of a jackal, was the Egyptian god of the dead. He presided over the embalming of the dead and conducted souls into the underworld. In the earlier periods he was preeminent as lord of the dead, but was later overshadowed by Osiris and came to be seen as a son of Osiris. The Greeks and Romans often scorned Egypt's animal-headed gods as bizarre and primitive (they mockingly called Anubis the "Barker") but they also identified Anubis with Hermes, morphing them into Hermanubis.

issued by Vetranio during his 10 month reign

the following is an excerpt from numiswiki

Vetranio, who commanded the legions in Illyria and Pannonia at the murder of Constans by Magnentius in AD 350, followed the example of this usurper and assumed the purple at Sirmium. Constantius II marched with his army to meet him, and on a plain near Serdica, Constantius II, appealing to the assembled armies that he was a son of Constantine the Great, Vetranio took off his diadem and abdicated. Constantius II treated him with kindness and allowed him to retire to Prusa in Bithynia, where he spent the remaining six years of his life.

Copied from Numiswiki

This coin alludes to the Sarmatian war and the victories of Constantine in the year of Christ 322. According to Zosimus (lib. 2) that great emperor drove back the routed Sarmatae beyond the Danube, and they pursued them to a place where they had rallied for the purpose of renewing the fight. He there again defeated and put them to flight, taking a great number of them prisoners, whom he doomed to captivity, and their King, Rausimodus being left among the slain.

Note: The Civic Issues of Antioch, Alexandria and Nicomedia were thought to have been produced by Julian II when RIC VI was written, therefore the entire series is missing. This series was produced during the period of Christian persecution by Maximinus II, Diocletian and Galerius and the Antioch issues portray important local statues: the Tyche erected by Eutychides (a pupil of Lysippus), the Apollo by Bryaxis of Athens and possibly the Zeus Nikephoros of the Temple of Apollo at Daphne which Antiochos IV commissioned for his great festival of 167 BC.

The picture has been modified as far as tint and colour goes as it would not co-operate after the wax was applied. This coin is very attractive in hand.

There is also a single dot above the Delta I in the right field, possibly a new variety, but probably just a die error as discussed in the attribution help forum

Discovered , thanks to Steve Minnoch , that the coin has a " code" on it or a type of anagram..this was apparently common in that era

the PVR below the horses combined with the murex shell wich was used for purple die , Purpura = (purple) gives the name of the moneyer. in this case Purpurio so ...PVR + PURPURA = Purpurio, sort of a pun for a lack of a better word, but still very interesting

this coin is still a mystery, it is an overstrike of an earlier coin, the weight posted was wrong, after getting a digital scale, the actual weight is 9.5 grams

BUT why is it cupped shaped ? trachys shaped like this did not come into existence for another few hundred years. It does not show sign of fire damage or warping,

it could have been bent by a smaller die, however, there are no bends where the edge of the die would have struck the flan.
