I was totally amazed by the number of different varieties of this basic design that were produced. In a limited search I found two examples of this variety. Wildwinds has an example of a Calpurnia 12b but that bird is much different in appearance and at the Wildwinds site it is called a duck. This exact coin is shown on acsearch website and is the only example of a Calpurnia 12b shown on that site. Here the bird is called a swan. Since all the dies are hand cut these maybe the individual concept each die shrink had for the bird to be included in the design.

GREEK, Macedonian Kingdom, Alexander III, 336-323 BC - Drachm - Signed DieAR Drachm (16mm, 4.26g): Price 2090A

Obv.: Head of Heracles right, wearing lion skin headdress, K on skin behind ear

Rev.: AΛEΞANΔPOY, Zeus seated left, holding scepter and eagle; monogram in left field.
This drachm is a lifetime issue from Miletos, circa 325-323 BC. It is signed by the artist who placed a "K" on the lion skin headdress behind Alexander's ear.

One could say Ho Hum just another drachm of Alexander III, however this coin is a little more interesting than most. From Roma Numismatics Limited’s 2012 description of a specimen it sold – “Extremely Rare. Only two specimens noted in ADM I (both in the ANS collection). This, and an equally rare contemporary issue at Magnesia ad Maeandrum are the only two instances of signed dies struck for Alexander.”

I was able to find two specimens in auction records. The Roma Numismatics Limited’s 2012 specimen in ACSEARCH (don’t use Price 2090A in the search use “signed die”). The Roma Numismatics Limited’s 2012 specimen should really be listed here, as pleased as I am with my specimen the Roma Numismatics Limited’s specimen is truly superior. The second specimen I found was this specimen in the NGC ancient coin auction records. The specimen shown here was sold twice in 2015 by Heritage I purchased the coin from the second sale.

Although the basic design of this coin is quite common, Although the basic design of this coin is quite common, I have been lead to believe that this variety is rare (if I read the info correctly this issue was produced only between August & September 13, AD 88). I did check this coin out on ascearch and found that the time of the search using “Domitian, Denarius” the search produced 988 coins. When I added the reverse legend to the search parameters I got one hit and that specimen was sold by “FORUM”. The listing did state it was very rare.

ANGLO-SAXON, England, Aethelred II 978 = 1016, Silver PennyObv. Diademed bust right, without scepter.

Rev. Hand of providence between alpha & omega, issuing from cloud composed of parallel lines
S-1144 - First hand type

Æthelred the Unready, or Æthelred II (c. 968 - 23 April 1016), was king of England (978 - 1013 and 1014 - 1016). He was son of King Edgar and Queen Ælfthryth. Æthelred was only about 10 (no more than 13) when his half-brother Edward was murdered. Æthelred was not personally suspected of participation, but as the murder was committed at Corfe Castle by the attendants of Ælfthryth, it made it more difficult for the new king to rally the nation against the military raids by Danes, especially as the legend of St Edward the Martyr grew. Later, Æthelred ordered a massacre of Danish settlers in 1002 and also paid tribute, or Danegeld, to Danish leaders from 991 onwards. His reign was much troubled by Danish Viking raiders. In 1013, Æthelred fled to Normandy and was replaced by Sweyn, who was also king of Denmark. However, Æthelred returned as king after Sweyn died in 1014.

"Unready" is a mistranslation of Old English unræd (meaning bad-counsel) - a twist on his name "Æthelred" (meaning noble-counsel). A better translation would be Redeless - without counsel (Rede).

MEDIEVAL, Italy, Genoa, 1139 - 1339Silver Grosso, Biaggi-838

Before 1100, Genoa emerged as an independent city-state, one of a number of Italian city-states during this period. Nominally, the Holy Roman Emperor was overlord and the Bishop of Genoa was president of the city; however, actual power was wielded by a number of "consuls" annually elected by popular assembly. Genoa was one of the so-called "Maritime Republics" (Repubbliche Marinare), along with Venice, Pisa, and Amalfi and trade, shipbuilding and banking helped support one of the largest and most powerful navies in the Mediterranean. Through Genoese participation on the Crusades, colonies were established in the Middle East, in the Aegean, in Sicily and Northern Africa.

The collapse of the Crusader States was offset by Genoa’s alliance with the Byzantine Empire, which opened opportunities of expansion into the Black Sea and Crimea. When I purchased this coin it was identified as as an annonomous issue from Genoa’s trading post at Caffa. The Black Death was imported into Europe in 1347 from the Genoese trading post at Caffa (Theodosia) in Crimea, on the Black Sea.

I was overjoyed to get this specimen. What pleases me about this coin is the extreme sharpness of its details. On the obverse the hair detail is bold and complete while on the reverse the veins in the leaves are bold and jump out at you. The boldness of these very fine details just points out the sharpness of the strike. In addition the both sides are well centered with no missing details.
