Antioch Mint; ANT in exergue

Ref: RIC VI, 167b

Condition: UNC/at Mint? Had this coin been perfectly centered with complete beading on both sides, I'd call it at FDC.

This is pretty much a flawless coin in mint condition that shows no sign of wear; nary a single scratch. The obverse portrait is simply perfect.

Struck just off flan on the obverse, this is an excellent and life-like portrait of the youthful, soon to be doomed, Caesar. Rare coin, especially from the scarce mint at Arles.

This coin, without any doubt, is the most beautiful issue that I have ever owned. It looked to have been cut from a pidgeon's-blood ruby, rather than struck from metal. I sold it to a very descerning Canadian collector a few years ago for an ungodly price. The money seemed good at the time...but in retrospect, I wish that I had kept it for my own.... Sad but true.

If you're collecting L Jr., note the "ribbon" on the obverse as well as the "CAES" vs "C"; and also the Rx legend in three lines; it's the small details like these that add up to the correct attribution. ;-)
This is one of my very favorite L Jr. issues from the mint of Siscia; lots of silvering still intact!

Ref/ Similar to RIC VII 311 = Rare 4
Note: This a truly curious coin for many reasons. The obverse inscription is missing the "B" in NOB C and is not a die inclusion. The cuirass depicted on the young Caesar is quite different than any I have seen and looks more like an Imperial mantle. There is also another spelling error on the reverse with a missing "A" in the inscription, again, not a die inclusion (*See above). RIC notes this coin as C3, or rad. and cuir. bust right. Ours is C4, rad. and cuir. bust left. In their note for #311, they mention that they only know of one example of this coin with the C4 portrait. Excessively rare or perhaps unique.

Unfortunately this particular coin is no longer in my possesion; it came to me in a consignment lot of uncleaned coins from a friend in Europe. Once identified, the dealer wanted it back, much to my dismay. :-( Sometimes it really hurts being honest, doesn't it? I sent pix of the coin to David Sear and this is what he had to say: "Very rare and interesting, a previously unrecorded officina for this type (RIC notes only the first officina, 'P')" Hense, a unique example. SWEET!
