ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΡΙΟΒΑΡΖΑΝΟΥ ΦΙ- ΛΟΡΩΜΑΙΟΥ

M/I monogram left field.

Other issues with this monogram appear with the date "ΘΚ", that is regnal year 29 or 67BC, so it seems reasonable to date this issue to 67BC, even though the date for this coin is off-flan.

Ariobarzanes I Philoromaios, lover of Rome, was King of Cappodocia between 96-63 B.C. He supported Rome against Pontus and Armenia. He abdicated in favour of his son Ariobarzanes II Philopator, in 62 or 63BC.

AR Legionary Denarius LEG VIIANT AVG III VIR R P C, galley r. mast with banners at prow

LEG VII, legionary eagle between two standards

Patrae mint 32-31BC

The VII Claudia Pia Fidelis is one of the oldest Imperial legions, on campaign with Caesar during his conquest of Gaul and Caesar's British invasions. During the civil war against Pompey, the seventh served at Pharsalus in 48BC and later in Africa at Thapsacus. The unit later served with Octavian at the Philippi. The unit seems to have existed into the 4th century AD, where it was recorded guarding the Middle Danube.

Corinth AE, Unknown Imperator.CORINTHI, Bare headed bust right.

C MUSSIO PRISCO IIVIR C HEIO POLLIONE ITER, in a wreath of parsley.

The identity of the obverse bust remains a mystery. I submitted it for identifcation on the boards with both archivium and Curtis Clay responding. They also were unable to attribute the bust to either Augustus, Tiberius, Agrippa Postumus or Drusus!

http://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=55882.0

On Curtis's advice I contacted Dr. Michael Amandry, who completed a significant work on the subject of Romano-Corinthian coinage titled "LE MONNAYAGE DES DUOVIRS CORINTHIENS."

Dr. Amandry's reply stated that the die on my coin was similar to other dies of Augustus or Drusus, but was unable to differentiate further. The identity of the bust must therefore remain partly solved until I can collect further examples of this coin for comparison.

The city of Parthenopolis was renamed during the reign of Trajan and is named after the Emperors sister Ulpia Marciana. It flourished under the Severan dynasty, explaining the sheer amount of coinage from this city of that era. The town exists today as Devinya, Varna region, Bulgaria.

The ruins of the city of Perge reside just under an hours drive from the seaside resort of Antalya on the south coast of Turkey. Strabo claims the city was founded by Greek colonists under the leadership of Mopsos and Calchas.

After the comings and going of the Persians, Alexanders Empire and the Seleucids, Perge passed over to Rome in 133BC.In 46 A.D., Perge became the setting of an event important to the Christian world. The New Testament book, the Acts of the Apostles, writes that St. Paul journeyed from Cyprus to Perge, from there continued on to Antiocheia in Pisidia. During the Constantinian era, the city became a centre of Christian worship, but waned in power after the Arab raids of the 7th centuries.
