Antoninus Pius, RIC 999, Sestertius of AD 158-159 (Statue in tetrastyle shrine) Æ sestertius (22.5g, Ø30mm, 12h), Rome mint, struck AD 158-159.
Obv.: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XXII , laureate head of Antoninus Pius facing right.
Rev.: COS IIII (around) S C (in field), statue holding a branch and a standard standing on a short column in terastyle shrine.
RIC 999 (S); BMC 2053-57; Cohen 332; Foss (RHC) 132:87
found in Louth (Lines, UK).

According to Foss (Roman Historic Coins), this coin was issued at the twentieth anniversary of the reign when a statue of Antoninus Pius was dedicated. Jencek on the other hand argues that the statue is not the emperor but the Genius of the Senate, honoured by a ciborium or aedicula, a four columned open structure with a highly ornamented dome. This issue thus could perhaps commemorate the 900th anniversary of the Roman Senate, 10 years after the foundation of Rome.

(I'm looking for a more attractive example!)

Antoninus Pius, RIC 1001, Sestertius of AD 158-159 (Fortuna Opsequens)Æ sestertius (22.4, Ø31mm, 12h), Rome mint, struck AD 158-159.

Rev.: FORTVNA OPSEQVENS (around) COS IIII (in ex.) S C (in field), Fortuna standing left, with patera, rudder and cornucopiae.
RIC 1001 (C); BMC 2059-60; Cohen 393; Strack 1163 (4 spec.); Banti 163; Foss (RHC) 130:68

The cult of this divinity, not celebrated previously on imperial coinage, goes back to ancient times and was established by Servius Tullius, Rome's sixth king.

Even though according to RIC this coin is common, it may be scarcer. Strack found 4 specimens, but there is no example in Wildwinds nor Acsearch.info; Banti records only 1 other specimen.

In AD 141, Antoninus Pius completed the temple of Venus and Roma which had been designed by Hadrian (in person) twenty years earlier. A series of coins was issued to celebrate this event. The temple consisted actually of two temples built back to back to form a single building. The ruins, which can still be seen today, prove that both temples consisted of ten colums. The coins suggest many decorative details.

According to some, this was issued on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the reign with celebration of temples which Trajan had restored. In fact it is unknown. The temple which is represented here has been a source of many speculations: Honos, Jupiter Victor, Pax and Venus Genetrix have all been proposed. Strack has many convincing arguments that the statue represents Genius and the temple is the one that Trajan dedicated to Divus Nerva.

Vagi argues that this is not Livia, wife of Caesar but Livilla, sister of Germanicus, wife of Drusus. This is supported by the fact that the title AVGVSTA is absent on the obverse and the titles of Drusus appear on the reverse. Together with the Drusus as and the twin's heads sestertius these types form the family bronzes of Drusus.

Vagi argues that this type commemorates the justice achieved on behalf of the murdered Germanicus. Since Germanicus was very popular in Rome, his murder lead to a public outcry in Rome. The portret on this coin is not Livia's (it would have been followed by AVGVSTAE as for the Salus dupondius) but a stylized portret probably referring to Germanicus' mother Antonia or his wife Agrippina Senior.

ex Gorny & Mosch (Giessen), Auction 169 (2008)

The reverse depicts the gods' support for Hadrian's adoption and assumption to the throne after the death of Trajan. It was one of the means of Hadrian to contradict the rumors that Plotina had arranged for Hadrian to be proclaimed emperor on the death of Trajan by falsifying her husband's testament. Having Jupiter's eagle flying down with the imperial scepter would be good propaganda to imply that the disputed succession was, in fact, correct and right.

RIC 568; BMCRE 1160; Cohen 949 (different description of women having one foot on a pedestal); Strack 526; Banti (I Grandi Bronzi Imperiali II-2) 517 (33 spec.).

ex H.D. Rauch (Wien), 83rd Coin-Auction (2008); ex. Hess-Divo AG auction 308 (2007)

The reverse legend 'LIBERTAS RESTITVTA' means 'Liberty restored'. The interpretation of this type varies. According to Clive Foss (Roman Historical Coins, 1990, Seaby, London) Hadrian faced considerable unpopularity at the beginning of his reign especially after the Senate, during his absence, had four high-ranking senators executed who were accused of conspiracy (even though he had promised never to execute a senator). He went to great lengths trying to gain the favour of the people. This included the cancellation of public debts and the expansion of Trajan's charity program to the poor children of Italy in AD 118, an act celebrated as the restoration of liberty.

Not listed in RIC nor Cohen. Curtis Clay confirms that this is a new variety, giving the following additional information: "The obv. die is Kraay's A88, Aes of Galba pl. VII, known to him with rev. Victory holding Palladium, one spec., Paris = Giard 173, pl. XII = RIC 353. That's the only obv. die Kraay or RIC knew with this exact obv. legend and the laureate, draped bust. ... This LIBERTAS PVBLICA rev. die was apparently unknown to Kraay in any combination."

Antoninus Caesar, RIC (Hadrian) 1081, sestertius of AD 138 (Concordia)Æ Sestertius (24.81g, Ø 32mm, 12h), Rome mint, struck under Hadrian in AD 138.

Numismatic note: Even though RIC rates this type as scarce only, in reality it is extremely rare: BMC only refers to C.131 (Paris), there is no specimen in B.M.); Strack lists this type in only 2 of the 30 collections, questioning one: Berlin (?; bare head); the other specimen is in Paris (draped bust, bare head; illustrated in Vol.II, plate XVII-898: same rev. die). This means that, apart from Strack's questionable Berlin specimen, all references refer to a single specimen in the Paris Cabinet des Médailles. See also Strack Vol.III, p. 316, note 6a, referring to Cohen 637 (RIC Hadr. 1078), which is probably a duplicate of Coh. 131, but without the CONCORD legend visible in exergue (exactly as on this specimen). A special variety exists with Spes figurine on back of throne, noted by Strack in his description: "Concordia s.n.l. (Spes.Füllh.) m. Schale" but not illustrated. However such a specimen now in coll. F. Diederik.

Historical note: After Aelius, the intended successor of Hadrian, suddenly died on New Year's day of AD 138, Hadrian adopted T. Aurelius Antoninus to fill the place. This coin belongs to one of the issues struck between 25 February and the death of Hadrian on 10 July 138 AD which announces the new Caesar.

This type refers to the emperor in his role as priest of the sun-god Elagabalus. For this, as well as for many other reasons, he was much detested by the Romans and soon murdered by his own troops. His body was thrown down a sewer after having been dragged through the city. Quoting one of the most remarkable and wonderful sentences from the old Dictionary of Roman Coins (see Elagabalus): "Thus perished, on the 11th of March, one of the most cruel, debauched and shameless wretches, that ever disgraced humanity, or polluted a throne, after a reign of three years and nine months, disfigured with every feature of hideous criminality and extravagant folly, not having attained more than the eighteenth year of his age."

This type celebrates the memory of Caligula's family: bringing back the ashes of his brothers Nero and Drusus.

Note: The legend on this coin is unusual, because it ends with TR P IIII P P P EX instead of just TR P IIII P P. A coin with the same rev. die was auctioned through CNG eAuction 280 lot 131. Also note that RIC 49 gives the erratic reverse legend ending with TR POT IIII P P instead of TR P IIII P P, compare Cohen 2 where it is correct.
