Note: The Civic Issues of Antioch, Alexandria and Nicomedia were thought to have been produced by Julian II when RIC VI was written, therefore the entire series is missing. This series was produced during the period of Christian persecution by Maximinus II, Diocletian and Galerius and the Antioch issues portray important local statues: the Tyche erected by Eutychides (a pupil of Lysippus), the Apollo by Bryaxis of Athens and possibly the Zeus Nikephoros of the Temple of Apollo at Daphne which Antiochos IV commissioned for his great festival of 167 BC.

These larger coins are almost unique among Judean issues, and were issued by both sides during the war between Herod and Mattathias Antigonus. As soon as Antigonus was dead, Herod abandoned them, making this one of the very few cases where it's possible to argue that the main purpose of a coin issue was propaganda.

domitian as caesar rider on horse.jpg
RIC 0957 Domitian as Caesar [Vespasian]AR Denarius, 3.44g
Rome Mint, 77-78 AD
Obv: CAESAR AVG F DOMITIANVS; Head of Domitian, laureate, bearded, r.
Rev: COS V; Horseman, helmeted, in military dress, cloak floating behind him, on horse prancing r., with r. hand thrown upwards and back
RIC 957 (C2). BMC 234. RSC 49. BNC 207.
Acquired from Aegean Numismatics, September 2007.

Issued at a time when Domitian was aspiring to an Eastern command against the Alani, Mattingly attributes this type to that cause: The rider is Mars calling Rome to the field of battle.

Other theories suggest the rider is either Domitian or a soldier. Curtis Clay has also proposed the idea that this type may well be of a commemorative nature, since much of Vespasian's coinage are copies of past popular types.

A lovely coin in hand, the portrait was the reason this one found a home in my collection.

A very odd coin. The draped and cuirassed bust is normally only associated with the last Mint 1 issue, the Pietas series is regarded as coming from the second mint. This is only the second specimen I know of and a fuller strike than the Chalfont hoard specimen.

ANTONINUS PIUS VICTORY.JPG
ROMAN EMPIRE, ANTONINUS PIUS. AR Denarius of Rome. Struck A.D.143. Obverse: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P COS III. Laureate head of Antoninus Pius facing right.
Reverse: IMPERATOR II. Victory standing facing left, holding wreath in her right hand and palm branch in her left.
RIC III : 111b
Weight : 3.486gms. Ex FORVM.

This coin commemorates the Roman advance into Scotland which saw the beginning of construction of the Antonine Wall, running across the central belt from the Clyde Estuary in the west to the Forth Estuary in the east. Since Antoninus had already taken the title “Imperator” on his adoption by Hadrian, he was hailed Imperator for the second time after this victory in Britain which was possibly engineered simply in order to give the new emperor military prestige.

ROMAN EMPIRE, Nero / Jupiter / DenariusAttribution: RIC 64 (RIC I)

Date Minted: 66-67 AD (Rome)

Obverse: IMP NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS - Laureate head of Nero facing right

Reverse: IVPPITER CVSTOS - Jupiter seated left, holding thunderbolt and sceptre

Weight: 2.84 grams

Size: 17.6mm

An excellent mature portrait of Nero with striking details and stylistically superior devices on a flan that is just a touch tight, but still full legends. The reverse, however, exhibits significantly more wear than the obverse, possibly from cabinet wear as it does appear that this coin has been out of the ground for an extended period. Lightly toned.
