Many of the Roman moneyers minted types that were based on homonyms or word games with their own name. On this type, Pan is a play on his name, Pansa. The temple of Jupiter Anxurus was built by Sulla at Terracina in Latium. The town's ancient Volscian name was Anxur.

The coins of this type were minted between 231 and 235 AD, during the reign of Severus Alexander, who ruled from 222-235 AD. Alexander ruled the empire wisely and well, but was strongly influenced by his mother, Julia Mamaea. This was greatly resented by the army, and along with their perception of Alexander as unwarlike, caused the troops under Maximinus to rise against him, assassinating both Alexander and his mother in their camp near Mainz, Germany in 235 AD.

The scarcity of this coin may owe in some part to the late date of its being struck – January-March 222 AD, in the very brief period just preceding his assassination, along with his mother and the purge of his followers – his ‘creatures’ (to note Gibbons’ term).
So being, that these coins were not held from release & circulation at the mints, to be melted down to strike new coinage for his successor, his cousin Severus Alexander.

Mamaea's imperial title was Iulia Augusta, mater Augusti nostri et castrorum et senatus et patriae, recalling the titulature of Julia Domna. Her position in the government was confirmed by the title consors imperii. Recognized as religiosissima, she had conversation with Origen while in the East as She accompanied Alexander on campaign there against the Persians in 230-231. In 235, she was with him in Germany, at Mainz, when they were assassinated by the troops, with Maximinus Thrax chosen as successor. She suffered damnatio memoriae.

“In the spring of 360, Julian's troops rose in revolt against Constantius, and Julian II was proclaimed as Augustus. The depiction of the bull is well understood. Julian II often slaughtered bulls to Mars, the Roman god of war.

"..On 4 May 360, Venus joined Mars to form a single star between the horns of Taurus, the Bull, as the constellation set in the western sky. Two weeks earlier, Mars was between the horns, and Venus rested on the shoulder of the bull. There can be little doubt that this planetary conjunction, or grouping, is shown on this coin.”

"The elder of the two sons of the emperor Septimius Severus, Caracalla is best-known for arranging the murder of his brother Geta after the two engaged in a power struggle in the months after their father's death. The murder offended contemporaries and colored the following five years of Caracalla's reign, a reign that ended on a Syrian road with the emperor's own murder."
