T.D. Yih, "Tiny Pitis Inscribed 'Shi-Dan' (Sultan) from Palembang," in ONS Newsletter 204 (Summer 2010), type I-1

Found in Palembang

Hang Li Po first appears in the Malay Annals as a Chinese princess sent to be the fifth bride of sultan Mansur Shah of Malacca. However, there is no reference to this event in official Ming documents. Li Po may merely be a beautiful concubine given to the Sultan. Alternatively, she may be the daughter of an otherwise unknown Chinese ruler in the area, to whom this coin may perhaps be attributed.

HUN_Lajos_I_Huszar_542_Pohl_79-9b.JPG
Huszár 542, Pohl 79-9b, Unger 429x var., Réthy II 94AHungary. Louis I (Lajos I, in Hun.) (1342-1382). AR denar (12-14 mm.)

Obv: + LODOVICI • R • VnGAR[IE], Two-part shield (Árpádian stripes and Angevin field of fleur-de-lis) with three lilies above and to sides.

Rev: S • LADIS—LAVS • R :, Standing nimbate king, facing, holding halberd and imperial orb, lily over Saracen’s head in right field (privy mark).

The type was struck 1358-1371 (per Huszár & Unger) or 1359-1371 (per Pohl). This privy mark was struck in Pécs by Johannes Saracenus (per Pohl).

Huszár/Pohl rarity rating 5. The descriptions and depictions of this emission vary from catalog to catalog with respect to the presence and placement of pellets in the legend. None of the catalogs depict the double pellet at the end of the reverse legend that appears on this coin.

Note: Ladislaus I (László in Hun.) (1077-1095) was canonized in 1192. His name typically appeared, albeit in an increasingly decaying form, on the reverse of 12th century emissions, and his stylized image and name appeared on this and other later emissions.

Note: The Saracen's head is a pun on the surname of Jacobus Saracenus (Szerechen, in Hun.) and his brother, Johannes, courtiers of Italian descent who were ennobled by Louis. The image of a Saracen's head appeared on their coat of arms. Jacobus became the kammergraf at the Pécs mint in 1352, and the Comes Camerarum Regalium in 1369. He died in the early 1370s, at which time Johannes succeeded him as kammergraf. The Saracen’s head is familiar from the so-called Saracen’s Head Denar issued by Louis from 1373-1382 (per Huszár, Pohl & Unger, although Huszár later wrote that the Saracen-head coinage incepted in 1372). This emission represents the one of the earliest appearances of the Saracen head on a Hungarian coin (it had appeared one year earlier on a garas (groschen)).

KHPIΛIC ωΔE ΠPOC ΠAΛVPIN
Bee
CKωΠI, recumbent stag; E to left, Φ to right
BMC 186; SNG Copenhagen 355

Head interprets the legend ΠAΛYPIN as related to υρoν, beehive, and ύppις, basket and conflated with πaλιν, bring back. From this, he suggests that the token would have been placed in a jar and shaken to produce a ringing sound, while the magical words were spoken. Thus, the piece would be a magical token, related to the folk tradition of ringing the bees into their hives. Such an explanation is perhaps overly fanciful.

The depiction is referring to the founder myth of Alexandria: The eagle carrying a bull's head which is a common occurence from now [Commodus Caesar] on, must refer to a foundation legend, like that told of Antioch on the Orontes, of an eagle carrying part of a sacrificial animal to a spot where the new city was destined to raise (Bellinger).

AR Half Groat i.m. mullet.
Crowned rose/crowned thistle. S. 2660. N.2105/1. Toned VF.
Size: 16 mm Weight: 1.02 grams
James loved the arts and was very generous to actors, playwrights, and other performers of the day. In particular, James I loved the theatre, and was captivated by Shakespeare's acting troupe, the Chamberlain's Men. Within ten days of arriving in London, James demanded that Shakespeare's troupe come under his own patronage. So they were granted a royal patent and changed their names to the King's Men, in honour of King James.

Septimius Severus Color ImpressionA quick colorized marble statue. Hair might be too brown for reality, I believe in older age it was peppered with grey like the famous family painting (the one with Geta scrubbed out), but he looked younger here so artistic license was used. Also, he should really be darker skinned but working on the white surface of the original pic made what I was doing seem dark ennough, in retrospect he should probably be a little more dark toned.12 commentsScotvs Capitis03/10/07 at 21:50dpaul7: WOW!
