This is the rare, initial, SACERD DEI SOLIS ELAGABAL type, with the emperor sacrificing left not right, and with the star erroneously behind him rather than before him. The star apparently stood for his sun god, to whom the emperor was depicted sacrificing, and therefore it should have been placed before him, above his patera and the altar.
We know that the star behind the emperor was wrong, because on quite a few dies of all four emperor-sacrificing types the star was eradicated from behind the emperor and re-engraved in front of him. Note that on the obverse Elagabalus is still unbearded, confirming the early date (c. summer 221).
The normal type, emperor sacrificing right, star before him, was represented by 181 specimens in the Reka Devnia hoard, compared to 3 specimens for this early variety. (Thanks to CClay for these details.)
At the age of fourteen, Elagabalus became high priest of the sun-god Elagabalus at Emesa in Syria. The cult was represented by a sacred stone, and in AD 219 when he moved from Emesa to Rome, he took the stone, probably a meteorite, with him. During his reign, Elagabalus devoted his efforts to the promotion of his cult god, building a lavish temple to house the stone. The coinage of Pergamon under Eumenes I crystalized the design of the kingdom’s tetradrachmai for almost 100 years. It features on the obverse a realistic portrait of the eunuch Philetairos, who was initially a treasurer for the diadoch Lysimachos. He entrusted to the eunuch 6000 talents of silver (and gold) for safekeeping in Sardis. However, Philetairos switched allegiance to Seleukos shortly before the Battle of Korupedion in 281 BC, when Seleukos defeated Lysimachos. Seleukos, in turn, was assassinated roughly a year later. The newly created kingdom enjoyed autonomy from the Seleukids and the fortress city of Pergamon was built with Philetairos as its “king”, although he was never publicly crowned as such. Philetairos coined at least three different types of tetradrachmai, which were influenced by his allegiance to different rulers. First, he minted Lysimachos-type coins for his master Lysimachos. After the latter’s defeat and death he next minted coins of the Alexander-type either with the legend Alexandrou or Seleukou. Lastly, in a show of self-assurance and independence, he minted coins with the obverse portrait of Seleukos and the reverse directly copied from the earlier Lysimachos-type coin with Athena seated. However, the similarity ends there: instead of putting a dominating diadoch’s name, he boldly put his name on the coins. After his death, the administration passed on to his adopted nephew Eumenes I. The new ruler was able to liberate his realm from the dominion of the Seleukids when he revolted, at the instigation of Ptolemy II of Egypt, and rather unexpectedly, defeated Antiochos I in Sardis in 261 BC. He greatly expanded his territory and founded several cities. His coinage initiated a type which showed a highly realistic and unflattering portrait of his predecessor Philetairos and showed him as diademed, heavy-set and ostensibly obese whose face dominates the whole space of the obverse of the coin. At this point, there is no need of legitimizing current rulers by reference to Alexander. They could either put their own portraits or the likeness of the founder of a dynasty which they belong. This would eventually become the norm for most coins of third century BC Hellenistic kingdoms. The design on Eumenes’ coins would remain unchanged for the next century and would be adopted by succeeding rulers Attalos I ((241-197 BC) and Eumenes II (197-160 BC). It was estimated that it required 200 obverse dies to mint the coins during those span of time of its existence. As for any long-lived (and much copied) designs of any ancient coin (i.e. coins of Phillip II, Alexander III and Lysimachos), the various Philetairou-type coins could be assigned to a particular ruler according to symbols and monograms and level of artistry. After Minos' suggestion I investigated the deposit in Athena's ear and below the earring. Under 12.5X it seemed to be some kind of waxy deposit rather than horn silver as I thought. Removed with a coctail toothpick under magnification with really smooth moves. I believe this was remains of wax somebody used to protect (?) the coin. I am astonished that previous owner + auction houses didn't try to clean it as it clearly made the coin look a bit odd. Velia was never conquered by the Lucanians, and in 275 BC signed an alliance with Rome. However over the centuries the mouths of the two rivers between which the city was built silted up the harbor, resulting in a ruined trade. In time the city became surrounded by marshlands, malaria ensued, and its inhabitants moved away.

Vlasto dates this coin to the time of Alexander the Molossian, but I believe it may be safely placed after the King’s death in 331, as the typical Epirote symbols are no longer seen (especially, as Evans points out, the eagle’s head). Alexander, uncle to Alexander the Great, arrived at Taras in 334 as defender, the leader of a mercenary army from Epirus hired to help defend Taras from the indigenous Italian tribes. However he was quickly seen to have something more in the way of conquest in mind. Having ignored the warning of the Oracle at the Temple of Zeus Dodona, Alexander pushed west and fulfilled prophecy, being killed while fighting the Lucanians at Pandosia, near the River Acheron.
The murex shell played a very large part in the Tarentine economy, producing a rich purple dye. In fact the early reference books simply describe it as “a purple shell”. Purple cloth from Taras was considered a great luxury throughout the Mediterranean.

Additional comments from Forum - "Ptolemy VI became king in 180 B.C. at the age of about 6 and ruled jointly with his mother, Cleopatra I, until her death in 176 BC. From 170 to 164 B.C., Egypt was ruled by Ptolemy, his sister-queen and his younger brother Ptolemy VIII Physcon. In 170 BC, the Seleukid King Antiochus IV invaded and was even crowned king in 168, but abandoned his claim on the orders from Rome. In 164 Ptolemy VI was driven out by his brother. He went to Rome and received support from Cato. He was restored the following year. In 152 BC, he briefly ruled jointly with his son, Ptolemy Eupator, but his son probably died that same year. This facing head of Herakles is a miniature masterpiece of the engraver’s art, including such small details as the Adam’s apple of Herakles. The tilt of Herakles head and his semi-skyward gaze is reminiscent of the preferred portraiture of Alexander the Great for whom Herakles was a patron God. The Kuliab Hoard from which this coin derives was found in clandestine (1995/6) excavations on an ancient site in the vicinity of Kuliab, Tajikistan, 8-10 km from Qizil Mazar, in the valley of the Qizil Su, on the right bank of the Oxus. The inferred find site is located about 80 km northeast of the famed ancient site Ai Khanoum on the left bank of the Oxus, a key Greco-Bactrian foundation.
The hoard reputedly consisted of 800 coins of which 250 were described by Bopearachchi in his paper. The hoard, consisted dominantly of small denomination silver and contained coins from the time of Seleukos I down to the time of Eukratides I. Almost all the coins were of Bactrian origin. It appears to have been a savings hoard that was closed around 145 BC, probably co-incident with the invasion of nomadic peoples from the north.
The Kuliab Hoard represents one of the easternmost finds of Graeco-Bactrian coins, proof that Bactrian influence extended well into the western Himalayan Valleys of Tajikistan to the north northeast of Ai Khanoum.
Probably my finest tetradrachm - the male equivalent Mona Lisa of coinage!
