Ephesos mint. Newell 51; SNG Fitzwilliam 2288; HGC 3.1, 1012d. Near extremely fine.

Ex Roma Numismatics Ltd. E-Sale 76, Lot 213

This is one of the finest depictions of a full length likeness of Poseidon portrayed on any Hellenistic coin made in antiquity. The pose made by the god of the sea (and of earthquakes and horses) is reminiscent of the bronze sculpture recovered from the sea off Cape Artemision and could probably be the direct inspiration for this type of coin. Poseidon was the personal patron god of the Macedonian king and it is no wonder that Demetrios included him in almost all of his coins.

The Pompeians, Medusa Triskeles / JupiterThe Pompeians; L. Cornelius Lentulus and C. Claudius Marcellus. Denarius, military mint in East, most likely Apollonia (Illyria), summer 49 BCE. (Known location of find - Dalmatia)

(Lucius Cornelius Lentulus Crus (before 97 BC – 48 BC) was Consul of the Roman Republic in 49 BC, an opponent of Caesar and supporter of Pompeius in the Civil War during 49 to 48 BC.
The gens Cornelia was one of the most distinguished Roman gentes, and produced a greater number of illustrious men than any other house at Rome. Servius Cornelius Cossus Maluginensis was first to achieve the consulship in 485 BC. The Cornelia gens was a major contributor to the highest offices of the Republic, and contested for consulships with the Fabii and the Valerii from the 3rd century BC. Over thirty percent of all consulships were held by men from Cornelii; several great commanders also came from this family.

Gaius Claudius Marcellus (88 BC – May 40 BC) was a Roman senator who served as Consul in 50 BC. He was a member of the distinguished Claudia gens. He was a friend to Roman senator Cicero and an early opponent of Julius Caesar. He was also noteworthy for marrying the sister of the future emperor Augustus, Octavia the Younger, with whom he fathered M. Marcellus, who was for a while Augustus' intended heir). An ancestor M. Claudius Marcellus, captured Syracuse in Sicily in 211 BC during the second Punic War.

Roman Military Diploma FragmentBronze Roman Military Diploma Fragment

Latin text on both sides

42mm x 17mm x 2mm.

3.83g
Dark green patina.

Found in the former Yugoslavia.

Late 1st century. Possibly during the reign of Domitian

Possible inscription thanks to Curtis Clay:

Line 3: ASV, prob. from NOMINA SVBSCRIPTA, "whose names are written below".

Line 4: maybe EMD, coming from CIVITATEM DEDIT, "he grants citizenship".

Line 5: ABVI, from HABVISSENT, "(to the wives that they presently) have".

Line 6: ELIBE, from CAELIBES, "unmarried".

Line 7: MTA from DVMTAXAT, "just or merely (one wife per soldier)"

Lines 8-11: Should be the month date and the current consuls, which if they could be restored would establish the date of the diploma!

This fragment was submitted to Istvan for analysis. His rendering below:
