RIC 0295 VespasianÆ As, 9.19g
Rome mint, 71 AD
Obv: IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG COS III; Head of Vespasian, laureate, r.
Rev: CONCORDIA AVGVST; S C in exergue; Concordia std. l., with patera over altar and cornucopiae
RIC 295 (R2). BMC p. 130 *. BNC -.
Acquired from Musa, December 2019.

The seated Concordia type is more frequently encountered on the dupondii and rarely on the As issues. This As featuring Concordia and an altar is quite rare, with RIC citing only one specimen in Munich. Mattingly mistakenly conjectured the type was possibly struck at Tarraco (BMC p. 130). The style, however, is unabashedly Rome mint. Mattingly also speculated the type 'stands for harmony in the imperial house'.

A rare variety with Sarapis holding a globe instead of saluting the emperor. The authors of RPC cite two coins: this coin, and the one in the Köln collection. There is also an example in the Ashmolean Museum collection (Milne 1380).

Roman Empire, Otho, Denarius CERES AVG SH79667. Silver denarius, Muona Otho 10b; Butcher-Ponting-Muona 6; ANSCD 1958.217.1; BnF III 1; RIC I 1 (7 spec. known, all minted with the same die-pair), Nice VF, the best portrait and most attractive of the seven known specimens, light rose toning, a few light marks and spots of porosity, Rome mint, weight 3.272g, maximum diameter 17.5mm, die axis 180o, 9 Mar - 17 Apr 69 A.D.; obverse IMP OTHO CAESAR AVG TRP, bare head right; reverse CERES AVG, Ceres standing left, grain-ears raised in right hand, cornucopia in left hand; from the Jyrki Muona Collection

This is the rarest Otho denarius type and one of the rarest 1st century Roman denarii. Only two museums, Paris and ANS, hold examples. A further specimen was found in archeological context in Denmark in 1990s. Besides these, four additional specimens are known. This coin has the best portrait and is clearly the most attractive of the seven known. Jyrki Muona obtained it in 2002 at the NYINC from Glenn Woods.

Otho minted three separate issues. The first and second issues followed Galba's standard of 90% silver. Otho's third issue was debased to 80% silver. All coins of the third issue share the reverse legend PONT MAX, perhaps to make it easy to distinguish the debased coins. One might think our rare coin is simply a reverse legend error for Otho's third issue, PONT MAX Ceres type. However, as Butcher et al. have shown, this is not the case. If CERES AVG was a simple reverse legend error, the flan would be 80% silver. This CERES AVG type was struck on second issue 90% silver flans, probably during planning for the third issue, and perhaps only for testing. The type was apparently not distributed, and was withdrawn, and melted when it was decided to debase the coinage and use the PONT MAX legend. It appears a small number were released, most likely by mistake.

RIC 419

After Faustina's death, Marcus returned to Rome and held a triumph in December 176. Then, according to the Historia Augusta, "he turned to finish off the war. . . . His son's character was already falling away from his own standards. For three years after this, he waged war with the Marcomanni, Hermunduri, Sarmatae, and Quadi, and if he had survived for a year longer, he would have made provinces out of them. Two days before he expired, his friends were admitted to his presence, and he is said to have expressed to them the same opinion about his son as Philip did about Alexander, when he thought ill of him, adding that he did not take it amiss at all that he was dying, only that he was dying leaving such a son to survive him. . . ."

Rev: P M TR POT III IMP V COS X P P; Minerva stg. r. on capital of rostral column, with spear and shield; to r., owl (M2)
RIC 183 (R3). BMC -. RSC -. BNC -.
Acquired from Forvm Ancient Coins, April 2014.

84 AD probably saw the peak of artistic quality with Domitian's precious metal coinage. Two years previous, the fineness of the denarius was increased and the style radically changed from the earlier issues. Upon Domitian's accession the veristic style of Vespasian and Titus still dominated, after the reform it became more idealised and much finer. By 84 the style had evolved to such a high degree that the mint was able to produce these finely engraved draped busts, albeit in small quantities. This extremely rare coin struck in 84 is an exquisite example of the new idealised style. This is the second known specimen of the type. Much experimentation was going on at the mint at this time with reverse types, busts, and style. I assume the amount of time an engraver spent on rendering these highly polished pieces was considerable, which could perhaps explain why they were not struck more commonly. RIC theorises the drapery represents a military cloak commemorating Domitian's recent German victory. Afterwards, the style remained idealised and fine but the finer portraits would sometimes appear with an aegis, the draped busts consigned to an experimental cul-de-sac. The idealised style would continue to evolve throughout the reign reaching baroque proportions by 88. It's a shame that this fine portrait bust was struck sparingly.

Ian Carradice speculated in his 1983 monograph Coinage and Finances in the Reign of Domitian that the same engraver who did this piece may have worked on an earlier left facing portrait from 81 (see my Domitian RIC 75). Although left facing portraits are extremely rare in Domitian's reign and it is not out of the realm of possibility that the same engraver was working at the mint three years later and produced another left facing bust, to my eyes the styles seem too different to warrant that conclusion.

The bust of Domitian here is superbly rendered, one of the finest portraits of Domitian I've ever seen on a denarius. Same obverse die as the unique specimen cited in RIC.

Regnal Year Θ or theta the 9th letter of greek alphabet.) RPC 1649; Sydenham, Caesarea 72. From the Bruce R. Brace Collection.

A rather rare coin. The British Museum has 2 specimens, this is only the 2nd example I have ever seen on the market. RPC 1649 lists two other examples with ETOYC abbreviated as ET: Berlin ex Imhoof, published by him in Swiss Num. Review 1898; and Seaby's Bulletin, Sept. 1982, D 75.

Vespasian was proclaimed emperor in Alexandria on July 1, 69, how does year 9 equal 76-77?
The regnal years at Alexandria began on August 29 of each year and continued through August 28 of the following year. In some cases two regnal years are counted in the same calendar year, for example Vespasian in 69. The first regnal year is counted for the portion of time he ruled in 69 till August 28 and his second year started August 29, 69 into 70.

A Roman parazonium is a long triangular dagger, 15 to 19 inches long, wide at the hilt end and coming to a point. In Roman art, it is frequently carried by Virtus, and is also sometimes carried by Mars, or Roma, or the Emperor, giving them the aura of courage. The parazonium was a symbol of rank and was used to rally the troops. An officer would exchange his parazonium for a gladius or a spatha if he was directly threatened during a battle.

RIC 35 (R). BMC 11. RSC 268a. BNC -.
Ex CNG E358, 26 August 2015, lot 323.

Titus' 14th imperial acclamation dates between 1 July to at least before 8 September 79 as two documents indicate - one a letter Titus addressed to the city of Munigua on 7 September, and the other a military diploma dated 8 September, both still show him as IMP XIIII. Effectively, this coin was struck during the time of the Mount Vesuvius eruption on 24 August, although the traditional date of the disaster is now disputed and may possibly have been later in the year.

Left facing portraits of Titus are much rarer than right facing, perhaps to a ratio of 1:10. This left facing Venus type from the second issue after 1 July is extremely difficult to find. Listed simply as 'rare' by the new RIC, this is perhaps one of those types which might be a bit rarer than the rating indicates.

Somewhat worn, but nicely centered and in fine style. I've noticed over the years that those denarii of Titus with dots in the legend tend to be of a finer style, such as this coin.

ROMAN EMPIRE, Antoninus Pius, AE Sestertius, RIC 615aÆ Sestertius (26,15g, Ø 33mm, 11h). Rome mint. Struck AD 140-144.

Rev.: P P TR P COS III around, [S C in ex.], Aeneas, wearing short tunic and cloak, advancing right, looking back, carrying his father Anchises on his shoulder and holding his son Ascanius by the hand. Anchises, veiled and draped, carries a box (or crown?) in left hand, Ascanius wears a Phrygian cap and holds a pedum.
RIC 615a; BMCRE 1264; Cohen 655 [80Fr.]; Strack 904; Banti 309; Foss (Roman Historical Coins) 128:57b.
Ex Numphil, june 2014 auction.

This very rare type has been struck from a single obverse die, with a bust with aegis and with the unique obverse legend "ANTONINVS AVGVSTVS PIVS" found nowhere else in the coinage of Antoninus Pius. This die was used exclusively with two very similar reverse dies differing only in the legend: TR P COS III (this specimen) and TR POT COS III.
