The use of VOTA inscriptions as yearly dates on these coins would seem to indicate that the original significance of the inscription had been completely forgotten during the period that Carthage was under Vandal rule. Now classed as Imperial issues by DOC and SBCV, these coins were, at the beginning of the 20th century, originally assigned to the Vandals by Warwick William Wroth FSA. Wroth was Senior Assistant Keeper of Coins and Medals in the British Museum as well as a numismatist and a biographer. His chief contributions to the literature of his particular department of the British Museum included a "Catalogue of the Greek Coins," which appeared in 1903, and the "Catalogue of the Imperial Byzantine Coins in the British Museum" which appeared in 1906. Wroth died on the 26th of September, 1911 at the age of 53.

In March, 534, the Vandal king Gelimer surrendered to the Byzantine general Belisarius ending the Vandal kingdom and returning the African provinces to the empire.
Large numbers of captured Vandals were transported to Constantinple and in April Belisarius returned to Constantinople and left a small force in Africa under general Solomon to complete the subjugation of the African provinces.
During the Summer, Belisarius was permitted by Justinian I to celebrate a triumph, the first non-imperial triumph for over 500 years.

Sicily, Akragas Hemidrachm (Eagle/crab, SNG ANS 1003-9) v.1SICILY, AKRAGAS

Struck 420-406 BC

Reverse: Crab; below, fish swimming right

Well-centered strike with attractive toning.

The ancient city of Akragas came into being around 582 BC, as a colony founded by Greeks from Gela, a city about 40 miles to the east. The site was well-chosen, strategically located on a high plateau near the Hypsas and Acragas rivers and controlling a vast and rich agricultural area.
By the 5th century BC, Akragas had become the second-largest city on the island (behind Syracuse), with a population of perhaps 200,000 people, and had become a leader in the art and culture of the Classical period. Part of that artistic brilliance was manifested in the city’s coinage, which includes some of the most beautiful and recognized coins of the ancient world. This coin, though small, showcases that artistic talent with finely rendered naturalistic images of various creatures, notably the crab, which was the symbol of the ancient city.

An extremely rare sestertius struck in 80 or 81 during Titus' great bronze issue. This is the first appearance of this Victory type on the coinage since earlier in Vespasian's reign. Could the occasion of the opening games of the Colosseum possibly have inspired the mint engravers to bring this reverse out of retirement? A dedicatory inscription on the new amphitheatre declared it had been funded from 'the spoils of war' and Victory featured prominently in its decorative scheme. Missing from the BM.

Acquired from Forvm Ancient Coins, June 2023.

In the years after the devastating Jewish revolt the pro-Roman harbour city of Ascalon produced a series of leaded bronze coins under the Flavians. The coins copy types previously struck under Augustus and Nero. Here we see Tyche as a city goddess along with Ascalon's city symbol a dove. Pliny the Elder mentions Ascalon as the only oppidum liberum in the region during the first century AD (NH 5. 68).

NB: An aphlaston is the upward curving stern of an ancient warship.

Persian Empire, Lydia, Anatolia, Xerxes I - Darius II, c. 485 - 420 B.C. Silver siglos, Carradice Type IIIa variety without pellets, Carradice NC 1998, pl. 8, 5 - 16; or underweight Carradice IIIb, Choice gVF, attractive surfaces, flow lines, bankers mark on edge, Sardes (Sart, Turkey) mint, weight 5.403g, maximum diameter 14.8mm, c. 485 - 420 B.C.; obverse kneeling-running figure of the Great King right, transverse spear downward in right hand, bow in extended left hand, bearded, crowned; reverse irregular rectangular punch; from the CEB Collection; ex Numismatic Fine Arts winter sale (Dec 1987), lot 371
Ex: Forum Ancient Coins.
Persian Lydia, Persian Empire, Lydia, Anatolia, Xerxes I - Darius II, c. 485 - 420 B.C., Carradice Type III was initially issued with the same weight standard as earlier sigloi, Type IIIa, c. 5.30 - 5.39 g. Carradice NC 1998 lists 12 examples of sigloi in the Type IIIa style but without pellets behind the beard. There may have been two mints, one issuing with the two pellets and one without. Or possibly all light weight examples without pellets are simply underweight examples of the Type IIIb, issued after c. 485 B.C. on a heavier standard, c. 5.55 - 5.60 g.

" I think that's a camel rising from a shell. The reverse has a figure - probably a shepherd milking a - again probably - goat. The obverse fits into a beloved theme on engraved gems of a large animal rising from a shell (lion, elephant, pegasus, and your camel). Seals share iconography with engraved gems more than coins, so these images appear on lead as well. The reverse image is also well attested on gems. It is part of a wide range of pastoral images that appear on engraved stones. As for this seal, I would say it is definitely Roman. My guess would be around AD 300." by Gert. Thank you Gert.

RPC 1028 (17 spec.).
Ex Leu Numismatik, Web Auction 18, 19-21 December 2021, lot 1953.

Toward the end of his reign in 94 or 95 Domitian adopted the sons of his cousin Titus Flavius Clemens with the intent of making them his heirs. He renamed them Vespasian the Younger and Domitian the Younger while making Clemens consul. However, not long afterwards Domitian became suspicious of Clemens and had him executed on the charges of 'atheism'. His wife Domitilla III was exiled as well on the same charges. We do not know the fate of the two boys, presumably they were punished in some way because they disappear from the historical record.

Smyrna was the only city in all of the empire to strike coins for the newly adopted heir Vespasian the Younger. No coins are known for Domitian the Younger. Perhaps Vespasian the Younger born in the late 80s was the eldest making him the senior crown prince. The coin portraits indeed show a child of around 7-10 years of age which would be about right. His coins could not have been struck for any length of time before news reached the city of the family's 'treachery', perhaps explaining the issue's rarity today.

As mentioned above Flavius Clemens was executed on the charges of 'atheism', this according to a much later account written by Cassius Dio. Dio goes on further to state that other Romans who drifted into Jewish ways were similarly executed. Many scholars have plausibility theorised that Clemens and Domitilla converted to Judaism and were punished by the religiously rigid Domitian. There is also a later Christian tradition that Clemens and his wife converted to Christianity, although there is no evidence to back up such a claim.

ANTIOCHOS VI AE20. EF/EF+. Antioch mint. Elephant to left.Obverse: Radiate head right, wreathed with ivy.
Reverse: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ ΕΠΙΦΑΝΟΥΣ ΔΙΟΝΥΣΟΥ in four lines above and below elephant, walking left.

Superb exemplar of this interesting type, very few circullated, in EF/EF+ condition, conserving full details in both sides, very bold reliefs and a precious green patina totally natural. The coin looks much better in hand than in photo (really!)

HGC 1043. Antioch mint, circa 144-141 BC. 7,9 g - 21 mm

fresco_trumpet.jpg
Painted Fresco - with Blue "trumpet"Painted fresco. White background with a trumpet shape that is mainly blue,
but dark green on the left side, and appears to be painted over a yellow base.
There are three green leaf designs above.

It is unclear if the design is meant to be a vase, a cornucopia, or entirely vegetal.

Such decoration likely dates to the 2nd - 3rd century AD.

7.5 x 9 cm.
