Thrace, Odessos, ca. 80-72/1 BC, AR Tetradrachm - Mithradatic Alliance issueHead of Herakles r., with the features of Mithradates VI of Pontos, wearing lion skin headdress.
ΒΑΣIΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡOΥ, Zeus seated l., legs draped, confronting eagle held on outstretched r. arm and grasping lotus-tipped sceptre, ΛAK before, OΔΗ (Odessos ethnic) in exergue.
Price 1192; de Callataÿ Group 3 (D2/R?). (30 mm, 16.04 g, 1h).
Freeman & Sear.
For this issue, the portrait of Herakles on the Alexandrine coinage of Odessos was adapted to the features of Mithradates VI. The exact reason for this brief experiment is not clear, although it probably reflects veneration for Mithradates when at the zenith of his success he evicted the Romans from Asia Minor, Macedonia, and Greece. This portrayal is found on three emissions (Price 1191-1193) issued by the magistrate ΛAKΩN, struck from six obverse dies. The experiment was short lived and the portrayal of Herakles quickly reverted to the more usual style, which was maintained to the end of the series about a decade later. Mithradates considered himself a descendent of Alexander the Great, so that the adaption of Herakles features to those of Mithradates on Alexandrine coinage links to him to his mythological ancestry.

References: Crawford 494/39a; HCRI 116; Sydenham 1096a; BMCRR Rome 4238-9; Mussidia 8; Julia 58.
Provenance: Ex Heritage Auction 3087 (17 Dec 2020) Lot 30041; Dr. Walter F. Stöcklin (d. 1975) Collection [Nomos Obolos 9 (25 Mar 2018) Lot 108]; acquired before 1975.
The moneyer is not otherwise known to history. Struck during the lead-up to Phillipi, the coin certainly reflects favor on the Caesarian side of the conflict, with the portrait of the late dictator on the obverse and devices referring to Caesar’s accomplishments on the reverse. The rudder and globe refer to Caesar’s military success and imperium over land and sea. The apex refers to his position as Pontifex Maximus. The cornucopia and caduceus allude to the blessings and happiness that Caesar bestowed on Rome. Multiple legend arrangements appear on this type, with curved and straight-line arrangements sometimes above, beside and below the devices.
The obverse fields show some raised striations, possibly caused from die cleaning or otherwise preparing the die for use. Other examples from the same obverse die show similar field striations.
This coin comes from the Stöcklin Collection, sold by Nomos over a series of auctions beginning with Nomos 14 in 17 May 2017. The collection consisted of ancient coins assembled over three generations in the family by Sebastian Roš (1839-1917), his son-in-law Dr. Walter F. Stöcklin (1888-1975) and grandson Dr. Walter M. Stöcklin (d. 1981).

Obv: IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG COS III; Head of Vespasian, laureate, r.; globe at point of bust
Rev: VICTORIA NAVALIS; S C in field; Victory stg. r. on prow, with wreath and palm
RIC 1178 (R2). BMC p. 201 ‡. BNC 812.
Acquired from Harlan J Berk, Fixed Price 4, October 2020.
A fairly rare VICTORIA NAVALIS variant struck at Lugdunum (modern Lyon) during the huge bronze issue of 71 AD. The Victory on prow type is traditionally attributed to the naval victory Vespasian won on Lake Gennesaret (Sea of Galilee) during the Jewish War.

Stratonikeia was located in SW Asia Minor, about 11km from Lagina, the largest known sanctuary of the goddess Hekate, "whom Zeus honored above all others" (Hesiod). It is likely that the cult of Hekate originated in this area a millennium or more before Her introduction into Greek religion at the conclusion of the Titanomachy, the legendary battle between the Titans and Olympians.
During an annual ritual the Priestess would lead a procession from the polis to Lagina where she would open the sanctuary with a sacred key. This key would eventually become one of the attributes depicted on later images of Hekate.

Obv: IMP CAES VESP AVG P M T P COS IIII CENS; Head of Vespasian, laureate, l.
Rev: PAX AVGVST; S C in field; Pax stg. l., leaning on column, with caduceus and branch
RIC 590 (C). BMC 668. BNC 656.
Acquired from CGB.fr, September 2020.
In 73 Vespasian and Titus Caesar held a joint censorship which was duly recorded on the coinage. This As with the slightly less common left facing portrait is from the very first bronze issue recording the censorship. After the recently concluded Judaean and Civil wars, Pax in her various guises was a major theme for Vespasian's coinage. The Pax leaning on a column type is likely based on a cult image while the legend 'PAX AVGVST' advertises the emperor as peacemaker.

Although there are fifteen varieties, of which ten circulated, Hartill only lists four and Jones three. This is the variety primarily described as ç´°å—背元 saiji hai gen (roughly “fine print å…ƒ gen on reverse”), and secondarily described asæ¹¾æ›²å† å¯¶ wankyoku kanmuri ho (curved crown of 寶 ho) and çŸä¸€å…ƒ Tanichigen (short first stroke of gen). Although not described as such in the Japanese sources, it is described by Hartill and Jones as having a crown of 寶 ho that slants up from the left. Jones adds that the first horizontal stroke of gen is short. This coin is smaller than indicated for the variety by Ogawa.
The å…ƒ gen character refers to the Gembun era, at the end of which (1740 = Genbun 5) the order to cast these cash was given. 200,000 strings a year were cast.

In the late spring or early summer of 80 AD Rome suffered a disastrous fire and soon afterwards a devastating plague (perhaps typhus or smallpox). Suetonius tells us that the pestilence was 'unprecedented' and Eusebius claims 10,000 perished. Felicitas, the personification of happiness and prosperity, was greatly needed by both the emperor Titus and the Roman people. This coin struck sometime in 80 or 81 (Titus did not renew the consulship in 81) advertises her blessings through the emperor. This was a fairly popular type during the reign and likely was struck to ease any public anxiety over the recent tragedies. Despite being common, it is missing from the extensive Paris collection.
The left facing portraits struck in this bronze issue tend to be in a slightly finer style than the right facing ones. Perhaps there was one gifted engraver who preferred his portraits facing left?

In a paper published in the 2016 Numismatic Chronicle, Bernard Woytek convincingly argues that this coin references military victories by the moneyer’s grandfather, C. Coelius Caldus (Consul in 94 BCE), in Spain and Transalpine Gaul. The obverse depicts the 94 BC consul, C. Coelius Caldus, as confirmed by the consular title abbreviation COS. References to Spain and Gaul appear on both sides of the coin. The obverse includes a vexillum inscribed HIS[pania] and a boar-shaped standard that was used by Gallic tribes. The reverse has two trophies: the left comprised of Spanish-style armor (round shield and crested helmet); and the right comprised of Gallic-style armor (oblong shield, carnyx, etc.). The left and right portions of the reverse inscription identifies C. Caldus as an imperator for 10 years. In the reverse center, a person prepares the epulum, a ritual meal. Woytek proposes that this meal was a supplication served in honor of C. Coileius Caldus’ victory against the Salluvii in 90 BCE. Caldus’ son Lucius, the moneyer’s father, was a member of the Septemviri Epulones, the college of priests that organized such feasts. Based on the inscription on the table on the reverse of this coin, it seems possible he was a member of this college of priests when they organized the supplication meal in honor of his father. The bottom portion of the reverse inscription identifies our moneyer, Caldus (IIIVIR means he is one of the three men superintending the coining of money). Ultimately, the coin references three members of the family: moneyer, father and grandfather.
