Five_Emperors.jpg
The Year of the Five EmperorsThe Year of the Five Emperors refers to the year 193 AD, in which there were five claimants for the title of Roman Emperor. The five were Pertinax, Didius Julianus, Pescennius Niger, Clodius Albinus and Septimius Severus.

The political unrest began with the murder of Commodus on New Year’s Eve 192 AD. Once Commodus was assassinated, Pertinax was named emperor but immediately had opposition coming from the Praetorian Guard. They plotted an assassination of Pertinax and carried it out. Pertinax was killed while trying to resist the troops. He was only emperor for three months. Didius Julianus succeeded Pertinax as emperor but was overrun by Septimius Severus and executed on June 1. Severus was declared Caesar by the Senate but Pescinnius Niger was quickly made his enemy when he declared himself emperor. This started the civil war between Niger and Severus as both gathered troops and fought throughout the vast Roman Empire. Due to this war, Severus allowed Clodius Albinus, who he saw as a threat to his throne, to be co-Caesar so that Severus did not have to preoccupy himself with the duties of the empire so he could go win the civil war he was waging against Niger. Most historians count Severus and Albinus as two emperors even though they ruled simultaneously. The Severan dynasty was created out of the chaos of 193 AD. and Septimius Severus started this dynasty. Overall, most sources denote this year in Roman history as a year of civil war since there were rapidly changing emperors who were fighting against one another to gain a foothold as Caesar. - Wikipedia

David Sear in "The History and Coinage of the Roman Imperators" says:

The reappearance of IMP in Antony's titulature suggests that this issue is subsequent to the second battle of Philippi (23 October), though as the Triumvir is still bearded it must have been struck quite soon after the deaths of Brutus and Cassius before orders had been given for the modification of the portrait. With Caesar's murder now avenged both Antony and Octavian could shave the beards which they had worn as a sign of mourning."

The first denarius is the common Rome mint example of the priestly implements type. The second coin is the same type struck at Antioch. Notice how the Antioch specimen has the trademark crude lettering style of that mint. Also, the second coin's portrait is reminiscent of contemporary tetradrachms struck in the 'Antioch' style.

Very rare

This coin is ugly, worn and holed, but... it's a Pertinax.

Publius Helvius Pertinax was commander of an equestrian unit in Moesia Superior (or Pannonia Inferior), on the Middle Danube in 167 AD, and fight against the Yaziges. He was also the commander of the First legion Adiutrix, stationed at Brigetio (modern Szöny) between 171-174 AD. Pertinax played an important role during the campaigns against the Marcomanni. It is very likely that I Adiutrix and the two newly founded legions II Italica and III Italica were grouped together in a single task-force. According to the historian Herodian, Pertinax freed the provinces of Noricum and Raetia completely, and took part in the attacks on the Quadi and Sarmatians north of the Danube.

History: In the end of 168 AD as Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus were returning home from the fontier of south Pannonia, Lucius suddenly became ill with symptoms attributed to food poisoning, and was dead at the age of 38 near Altinum (Altino). The older Emperor accompanied the body to Rome, where he offered games to honour his memory. After the funeral, the senate declared Verus divine to be worshipped as Divus Verus.

Additional comments from Forum - "Ptolemy VI became king in 180 B.C. at the age of about 6 and ruled jointly with his mother, Cleopatra I, until her death in 176 BC. From 170 to 164 B.C., Egypt was ruled by Ptolemy, his sister-queen and his younger brother Ptolemy VIII Physcon. In 170 BC, the Seleukid King Antiochus IV invaded and was even crowned king in 168, but abandoned his claim on the orders from Rome. In 164 Ptolemy VI was driven out by his brother. He went to Rome and received support from Cato. He was restored the following year. In 152 BC, he briefly ruled jointly with his son, Ptolemy Eupator, but his son probably died that same year. In 145 B.C. he died of battle wounds received against Alexander Balas of Syria. Ptolemy VI ruled uneasily, cruelly suppressing frequent rebellions."

Civil War Era LetterI have copied the letter verbatim, so the misspellings are as they were originally written. I got this letter from an abandoned farmhouse in Kansas that belonged to my paternal grandfather's father. No one I asked was able to give me information as to who these people were. Perhaps they are related to me, but I have yet to corroborate this. The letter was in the original envelope.

An extremely rare Titus Caesar Ephesian denarius. The AVG in wreath with the EPHE mintmark is only known from a handful of specimens.

The portrait has an almost Otho-like quality to it, especially the hair. Another variant of the type is bareheaded.
