Roman Empire, Gordianus III - overstrikeGordian III. (238-244 AD). Antioch, 239 AD. (gm*), IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, bust radiate, draped, cuirassed right. Silver antoninianus with overstruck reverse FIDES M[ILITVM] on type [AEQVIT]AS AVG. The coin looks like an Antioch work from 238-240 AD (IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG).

Current revers (overtype):
FIDES MILITVM, Fides standing left, holding long standard and transverse sceptre (the rest is seen left at feet)

This type is unlisted (in RIC, RSC) as an Antioch coin, but is not unknown completely. If we are looking for "Fides standing left, holding standard and transverse sceptre", than we find type RIC-1 (Rome), RSC-86 (Rome). In Antioch mint we find Fides with standard and cornucopiae or with two standards. So this coin is probably a new Antioch type with standard and transverse sceptre. The difference between the roman type (RIC-1, RSC-86) and this antiochian is in the lenght of the standard. The mint in Rome used (on gold, silver, bronze coins) shorter standard, that not divides the revers legend and ends under the letters of the legend. And not only at type FIDES MILITVM, but also at another types with Fides (for example P M TR P II COS P P, RIC-15). On antiochian antoninians we see a long standard, that divides revers inscription (mostly FIDE-S). This long standard is seen (during period of 238-240 AD with CAES M ANT on obvers) on another antiochian types (e.g. RIC-183 = RSC-90 and 91 - all with long standard and cornucopiae; RIC-185 = RSC-93 seated (!) Fides with long standard and cornucopiae).

Restruck on type:
AEQVITAS AVG, Aequitas standing and facing left, holding scales and cornucopiae (RIC-177a, Coh-17, RSC-17a). I suppose the original coin is from Antioch mint (Aequitas stading left) and not from Rome (Aequitas standing half-left, RSC-17), although the figure of Aequitas is just partially visible.

Conclusion:
mint Antioch, 239 AD, RIC-unlisted (Antioch), RSC-unlisted (Antioch)
IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, rad., dr., cuirass., r.
FIDES M[ILITVM], long standard and transverse sceptre - overstruck on type [AEQVIT]AS AVG

but are clearly from different individual coins).

A very historically significant coin minted by the Romans to commemorate the conquest of Judaea. This Judaea Capta (Judaea Captured) series of coins was the largest issue ever to commemorate the defeat of a nation.

After the death of Ptolemy VIII in 116 B.C. Cleopatra III ruled jointly with her mother Cleopatra II and her son Ptolemy IX. Cleopatra III expelled Ptolemy IX 110 B.C. and replaced him as co-regent with her second son Ptolemy X. Ptolemy IX regained the throne in 109 but was again replaced in 107 B.C. AE63. Engraved by Charles Jean Francois Cheron. ORIGINAL STRIKE, very rare.

Charles Jean Francois Cheron (1635-1698), one of the most distinguished artists of the school of Jean Warin, was born at Nancy and was trained by his father, Jean-Charles Cheron, engraver to Charles IV, Duke of Lorraine. Cheron went to Rome and became engraver of medals for Clement IX and Innocent X. Cheron's style in his Roman medals is of remarkable boldness, and his medals of Pope Clement IX and of Bernini are grandiloquent and among the finest Italian medals of the period. He returned to France in 1675 and was employed by Louis XIV at the Medal Mint at Paris for about twelve years, where he contributed several medals to the medallic series of the monarch, the Histoire Metallique. His medals are considered to be in an international baroque style.

The Chimaera, featured on the obverse of this coin, was a mythical fire-breathing beast; a composite of a lion, a goat and a snake. In myth, it inhabited Lycia in Asia Minor. It’s sighting was considered to be a portent or omen of storms, shipwrecks and natural disasters. The Chimaera’s representation in the arts is wholly Greek. It evolved to become a decorative motif in the region around Corinth. The pairing of a motif that forebodes disaster on the obverse, with a dove, the symbol of Aphrodite, goddess of love on the reverse is curious. Perhaps this was a metaphor for the ancients’ view of the double-sided nature of life?

vespasian divvs column.jpg
RIC 359b Divus Vespasian [Titus]AR Denarius, 3.30g
Rome Mint, 79-80 AD
Obv: DIVVS AVGVSTVS VESPASIANVS; Head of Vespasian, laureate, r.
Rev: Column mounted by shield and topped by urn, flanked by two laurels; in field, E-X, on shield, S C
RIC 359b (C). BMC 124. RSC 149. BNC 99.
Acquired from Beast Coins, May 2006.

There are four commemorative reverse types that were issued by Titus in honor of his father Vespasian after his death; victory and trophy ( a continuation of a reverse Vespasian issued before his death in 79 A.D.), two capricorns supporting a shield, and an ornamental quadriga.
This denarius is my favorite of the four, two laurels flanking a column and shield with an urn placed on top. The urn presumably contains the ashes of the deified Vespasian. The laurels evoke those planted outside Augustus' door. The shield with the inscribed S C show the divus honours voted to Vespasian by the senate.
Apparently Vespasian thought the idea of being deified was amusing, as his death approached he uttered the famous line "Woe's me. Me thinks I'm turning into a god."
A comet appeared in the heavens near the time of his death.

This is a rare variant with the E and X flanking the urn instead of the column.

RIC 601 DomitianAR Denarius, 3.27g
Rome mint, 88 AD
Obv: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P VIII; Head of Domitian, laureate, bearded, r.
Rev: COS XIIII LVD SAEC FEC inscribed on column; to r., incense burner, further r., Herald stg. l., with wand and shield
RIC 601 (C). BMC 135. RSC 73. BNC 124.
Acquired from Beast Coins, January 2010.

The type was minted in 88 AD in honour of the Secular Games Domitian held in that same year. Secular Games, or Ludi Saeculares, were theatrical games held at the end of a saeculum (the longest span of a human life, figured at 100 years). Domitian used the Augustan cycle, although he celebrated them six years early.

The reverse features a column with the inscription LVD SAEC FEC: "He Conducted the Secular Games", a herald who announced the games, and an incense burner for sacrifice. Quite a nice numismatic record of an event.

This is a type I've always wanted to add to the collection. Another reverse that pushes the limits of how much a die-cutter can fit onto such a small flan. Good metal and a decent portrait.

Antoninus_Pius_terracotta_bulla.JPG
Roman terracotta bulla of Antoninus PiusFAKE

Terracotta bulla
138-161 AD
Laureate portrait of Antoninus Pius facing right

Bullae were seals attached to documents or orders as a means of authentication. This one clearly shows the image of a laureate portrait of Antoninus Pius facing right. With such a profound Imperial portrait, its likely that this was used to seal official orders from the Emperor or one of his aides. The reverse of the piece bears striations from papyrus or cloth and still bears the fingerprints of the official who pressed it.

Purportedly found in Egypt.
