ManFacedBullCoinFeb2023.jpeg
Neapolis, Campania, Italy270 - 250 BC
AE 21, 5.763 grams, 135 degrees

O: NEOΠOΛITΩN, laureate head of Apollo left, long wavy hair, E behind

R: River-god Acheloios Sebethos, as a man-faced bull, standing right, head turned facing, being crowned by Nike who flies right above, MB monogram below, possibly IΣ in exergue (off flan)

Ref: Potamikon 333, Taliercio IIIa.10, HN Italy 589; BMC Italy p. 115, 219, SNG Cop 505, Sambon 658

Notes: VF, irregular flan shape typical for the type with remnants of casting sprues, nice jade green patina, light corrosion, Campania mint. I will credit Nick Molinari's book, Acheloios, Thales, and The Origin of Philosophy, for me wanting a man-faced bull coin. The book is really good, even if it was over my head at times. Fascinating read and I find his conclusions quite convincing. Knowing what the man faced bull is makes all the difference in understanding these coins. I am thrilled to have an example.

Greek, Pamphylia, Sidemid 1st -mid 2nd cent AD
AE 15 mm, 18 mm, 1.96 grams, 0 degrees

O: Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet

R: CI-ΔH Nike alighting to left, holding wreath in her outstretched right hand and palm branch with her left

Ref: Unpublished?, but cf. SNG France 740 var

Notes: Notes: any legends are unreadable. The use of the latinized C in the ethnic, instead of the old Greek Σ, is an indication that this coin was struck around the time of Nero or later. The first use of the letter C is attested during the reign of Tiberius, but the old Σ was used almost exclusively until the reign of Claudius.

Bamiyan? mint according to Tye

O: Horseman right, holding standard. Sri Hamirah ("Amir") around

R: Bull standing left, partial Sri Mahamada Sama in Nagari

Ref: Tye 164

Notes: High quality silver coin from the famous Muslim Ghorid conqueror of Delhi - the silver is debased, but excellent quality metal, rare this nice. That note is from the dealer. I would add that I really like the “Indian” bull and horseman jitals. This one feels and looks really nice in-hand. Bamiyan is west of Kabul and south of Balkh. I did a tour in Afghanistan, mostly in Ghazni province.

Note: Light green patina. In NGC encapsulation 5872734-031, graded VF. A couple of interesting things about this one, this is to this day the least expensive coin I have ever bought at auction. ANS probably lost money getting this one encapsulated unless they really got a deal from NCG. And I popped it out of its prison as soon as I got it. I did keep the little NCG tag in case it matters one day and I suspect it will not. The only email ANS has never answered me on was my email asking why they sent all these coins to NCG.

Kings of Macedon, Alexander IV or Philip III Arrhidaios323-317 BC
AE half unit, 16 mm, 4.2 grams, 180 degrees

O: Gorgoneion head facing in the centre of a shield surrounded by five double crescents with five dots between them.

R: B-A across fields, Macedonian helmet with cheek pieces. Rose in lower left field.

Ref: Price 2070; HGC 3 958a. This is a difficult one. Alexander IV was not really a king except in name. One source says minted under Asandros, circa 323-319 BC. Another source lists it as Phillip III Arrhidaios. Hard to tell if the image inside the shield is a gorgoneion or Herakles, but I think gorgoneion.

AE 17 mm, 3.57 grams, 0 degrees

O: Veiled bust of Laodike right, star countermark to left
R: ΣΙΝΩΠΗΣ, facing statue of Apollo Iatros holding branch over tripod and phiale

Ref: SNG Black Sea 1542; HGC 7 423 (references do not include countermark).

Ex- Marc Breitsprecher, Feb 2023; ex-Chicago family collection; ex-Elie Boudeau, Paris dealer, includes his tag from before 1912.

Notes: Good Fine+. Very interesting coin and pedigree. Very rare (Hoover rarity is R2); minted under Mithradates V and there is only one official royal coin of Mithradates V. Sinope was the capital of Pontos at this point and had been conquered in the 180's BC. The countermark seems to be even more rare and the star countermark is associated with Pontos and the royal family of Pontos. On AcSearch, only four specimens exist from 2016 to 2023, three do not have the countermark. Fascinating coin in so many ways. Needs more research by me.

On the dealer, Elie Boudeau: tag dating prior to 1912 - with dealer name, coin description and price (1.00 franc, about 20 cents) hand-written in French with an ink pen. Élie Boudeau (1853-1912) was a politician and numismatist in late 19th century-early 20th century Paris. He served in the 5th legislature of the Third French Republic from 12 November 1889 to 14 October 1893. He owned a shop in the numismatic district of Paris at 11 Rue Rameau, only a stones throw from the Bibliotheque Nationale and one block from the Rue Vivienne where several coin shops, including CGB, still exist today.

AppollodotusI.jpg
Indo-Greek: Apollodotus I174 - 165 BC
AE 22 mm, 10 grams, 0 degrees
Denomination B Indian Module

O: Apollo standing facing, holding arrow in right hand and bow in left, no monogram, Greek legend: BAΣIΛEΩΣ AΠOΛΛOΔOTOY ΣΩTHPOΣ

R: Tripod within dotted border, monogram at right, Kharoshthi legend on three sides: maharajasa apaladatasa tratarasa

Ref: HGC 12 120

Notes: Quadrangular flan. Uncertain mint in Paropamisadai or Gandhara. From my research Appollodotus ruled south of the Hindu Kush and not in Bactria. The area of his rule is largely in what are today Pakistan, India, and parts of Afghanistan. The mint could be in a rather wide area. This coin makes the cut for this folder as all these regions were so interconnected.

O: hound left, tree on far side

R: Gothic letter H between two annulets, struck over raised square (quadratum supercusum)

Ref: Wittelsbach 3435

Notes: VF, rare. This is an interesting coin purchased mainly because it has a dog, but also because I have been to Bavaria-Landshut. I also appreciate its technique of manufacture. I find it quite pleasing in hand. Also, it appears that Henry XVI the Rich was not a nice man.

Notes: Toned, porosity. Near VF. Regarding the van't Haaff attribution, I believe it is certainly Type 9.1.2, I am not so sure it is 6A because the beard is not as long on my coin. Plus, the mintmark is off flan or obscured. For now, I am going with CNG's attribution for lack of a better one from my perusal of van't Haaff.
