Here is a cabinet I built for a collector that combines multiple storage methods. There are several standard trays for raw coins, two open format drawers for thicker items such as slabs, two drawers for holding 2x2 flips/envelopes, and a single 4" deep drawer on the bottom.

Herod Philip under ClaudiusHendin- 528 / 1219 / 6250
Minted at Caesarea Philippi (Paneas)
Dated RY 5 of Herod IV (1/2 AD)
7.25 grams / 22 mm

Obv. – Bare head of Augustus right. Legends around.
Rev. - Bare head of Herod Philip IV right; [L E] (date) across field. Legends around.

Philip was the first Jewish ruler to place his likeness on their coins. Neither of his brothers, Antipas or Archelaus, did so. Because Philip’s territories were largely non-Jewish, it was possible for him to do so without the kind of uproar that almost certainly would have occurred in Jerusalem or other areas more heavily occupied by a Jewish population.

This was my most ambitious project so far. There are two separate cabinets, both for the same collector. The one on the left contains 5 drawers each capable of holding 60 slabs. The other is a 45 tray cabinet with a variety of tray configurations, and a total capacity of over 2,200 raw coins. They were shipped in four boxes weighing approximately 215 pounds, total. (The pictures were taken at different times and in slightly different lighting conditions, which tends to make them look different in color, but they actually matched quite well.)

This type was the second issue to definitively feature a lifetime portrait of Julius Caesar, the first being an issue from Bithynia minted ca. 47/6 BC (RPC I 2026). Both of these bronze issues precede the earliest appearance of his portrait on a coin minted at Rome, that being the denarii of M. Mettius issued in January 44 BC.

Herod I - 8 prutot (dated year 3 = either 40BC or 37BC)Hendin-486 / 1169 (03)
7.03 grams

The dating of these coins is subject to debate. Some say that because Herod was appointed Tetrarch of Samaria by Marc Antony in 42BC, that "year 3" would correspond to 40/39BC. Others feel that because Herod was appointed King of Judaea by the Roman Senate in 40BC, that "year three" should then represent 37BC. In all reality, the debate will most likely never be settled conclusively, one way or the other.
