Seleucia Pieria was the port of Antioch. Her main sanctuary was Zeus Kasios (the god who is on Mount Kasios, near the city), worshiped as a conical sacred stone - exactly like Elagabal in Emesa.

Domitius Domitianus, stationed in Egypt, rebelled against Diocletianus in july 296 AD and was proclaimed emperor. He was defeated during spring 297 AD. Diocletian decided to close the alexandrian mint, so the coins of Domitianus are the last provincial coins from Alexandria. Also, Domitianus was the only ruler to strike octadrachms (in paralle with didrachms, tetradrachms and hexadrachms)

ROMAN EMPIRE, Pulcheria, AV Tremissis, Constantinople.Obv: AEL PVLCHERIA AVG. Diademed and draped bust right.
Rev: No legend. Cross in wreath; in exergue, CONOB*.
RIC X: 214

Pulcheria was the daughter of Arcadius and Eudoxia and the elder sister of Theodosius II. Although she was only 15 she assumed the regency on behalf of her brother and was made Augusta in A.D.414. Even after Theodosius attained his majority, Pulcheria remained in control of the government, maintaining that supremacy throughout most of her brother's long reign. And when Theodosius II died in A.D.450, it was she who selected the senator Marcian as his successor. When Pulcheria died in A.D.453 she left all her possessions to the poor.

Obv.: D [C]LODIVS AL - BINVS CAES , Head, bare, r.
Rev.: PROVID - AVG COS / S - C , Providentia standing l., holding wand over globe and sceptre.
RIC IV, part I, p. 51, no. 50 ; C 59

Decimus Clodius Septimius Albinus was born in Hadrumetum (modern Sousse in Tunisia) and came from a prominent senatorial family. He held high office under Marcus Aurelius and continued under Commodus, becoming consul in 187 and governor of Britain in 191. After the murder of Pertinax and the purchase of the Empire by Didius Julianus, Albinus, joined by his rivals Pescennius Niger and Septimius Severus, made preparations to march on Rome. Severus got there first and, in order to free himself for battle in the East, had Albinus proclaimed Caesar and made him his heir. Needless to say, after his defeat of Niger, Severus turned on Albinus and had him declared a public enemy in 195. Albinus was hailed emperor in Lugdunum in either late 195 or early 196, and spent the next year raising troops: Severus moved into Gaul with his army in 196 and in a huge battle outside Lugdunum on 19 February, defeated Albinus who then committed suicide.

The holy stones (baetyls) were meteorites. Especially in Semitic religions they were worshipped as deities. The most famous was the stone of Emesa, worshipped as the sol god Elagabal, and the Kaaba in Mecca, a pre-islamic sanctuary.

Scarce, about EF, light toned

The Mount Argaios (Lat. Mons Argaeus) was the highest mountain in Asia Minor. Today it is Erciyes Dagi, 3916m and volcanic. This mountain was sacred since the time of the Hittits. Agalma is an item for decoration, a word, a sentence, but then too a cult statue, or a votive gift for the gods, then an idole.

It seems to be the depiction of a local event. We know tat Severus after his campaign against the Parthians AD 202 or 203 visited the camps in Moesia and Pannonia. At this occasion he could have visited Nikopolis too and the coin could be struck to celebrate his advent...Under Macrinus this depiction returns; there was no celebration of an advent for him, but perhaps there was another unknown reason (Pick)

Interesting coin because it was the last of the billion tetartera , the billion series was retired due to inflation. Hendy has dated this coin early in his reign partially because of the legend of the DOC example. However, this coin contridicts that, here the legend is not abreviated but has the complete family name as does the example in coin archives. I still believe that these coins were minted early on in the Alexius IIIrd sole reign. This example is the nicest of the other examples I have seen on the web and in DOC

"The elder of the two sons of the emperor Septimius Severus, Caracalla is best-known for arranging the murder of his brother Geta after the two engaged in a power struggle in the months after their father's death. The murder offended contemporaries and colored the following five years of Caracalla's reign, a reign that ended on a Syrian road with the emperor's own murder."

Islamic glass coin weightGlass weights were used, primarily, as weight standards against which a quantity of struck gold [dinars] and silver [dirhams] and sometimes copper [fals, fulus (pl.)] were weighed since the weights of the individual coins varied significantly more than those of the glass weights. In addition, glass weights from the Umayyad and early 'Abbasid periods often included extensive data such as the name of a governor, his financial officer and the intended weight1 commentsTanit07/09/06 at 17:01freddy_k: Interesting find, thanks for sharing

Acquired from Glenn W. Woods, February 2005.

A 'rustic idyll' reverse that is part of an agrarian themed issue of types struck in 77-78. Peace and prosperity was the dominant theme here. One (far-fetched?) theory puts forward the idea that the sow and piglets represents the X legion based in Judaea because the pig was their legionary symbol. I believe this is stretching a connection too much.

Artistically rendered and very pleasing to the eye with nice toning.
