At the time of Britannicus there was a magistrate Chaleos. Apollodoros seems to be his son. Aigai was the centre of the worshipping of Apollo Chresterios, meaning the foresayer, the prophet. It is known from an inscription that the inhabitants of Istros about 250 BC have sent a delegation to Aigai asking wether the oracle would tolerate the introducing of Serapis to Istros.

Very rare, F

The rev. belongs to a coin series of Nikaia which shows the emperor in a galley where he is welcomed by the local deities of Nikaia (cf. Rec.Gen.469f). A similar motive is found on a coin for Gordian III, where the City Tyche is presenting the young Dionysos to the sitting Roma (Rec.Gen.Taf.84, 27).

The metropolis of Bithynia was in fact Nicomedia but Nicaea raises a claim upon that title as is shown by a coin issued under Domitian with the legend "the Nikaians, the first of the eparchias". From this claim emerged a legal dispute which finally was decided by Valens in that way, that Nicaea and Nicomedia both was allowed to call themselve the first city of Bithynia but that only Nicomedia was the metropolis. But this vain title was useless: By the new arrangement of the provinces Chalcedon became the metropolis of the anterior Pontus. It's known a discourse from Dion of Prusa - who lived in the time of Domitian - in which he challenged the Nicomedians to peace with the Nicaeans.

VF, medium brown patina, well-centered with a solid strike.

The capricorn standards likely represent Legio XIIII Gemina Martia Victrix, the legion which had initially supported Septimius Severus in his bid for the purple. While rather distantly related to Septimius Severus through Julia Domna, though named after him, Alexander seems to have encouraged a rumor that he was in fact the illegitimate son of Caracalla and therefore the grandson of Septimius. This coin then suggests an interesting and subtle use of propoganda.

The Mount Argaios (Lat. Mons Argaeus) was the highest mountain in Asia Minor. Today it is Erciyes Dagi, 3916m and volcanic. This mountain was sacred since the time of the Hittits. Agalma is an item for decoration, a word, a sentence, but then too a cult statue, or a votive gift for the gods, then an idole.

Sozon was a Phrygian rider-god with labrys possibly related to the Thracian rider-god Heros. In Greek times he was associated with Zeus, Apollo and Sabazios/Dionysos.
Aphrodisias was one of Augustus' favourite cities, which was enhanced by him and evolved into one of the leading cities in Asia minor.

MacDonald: Types 187-189 are an exception to the rule that the portrait of the emperor appears only on the largest denominations of Aphrodisias. The reason is fairly obvious. The portraits of 0234-0236 are distinctly juvenile, and early in the reign of Gordian III there were no other members of the imperial family whose portraits might be put on the coins. When Gordian III married Tranquillina, her portrait appeared on this denomination, Types 190-192

This type, struck in the first year of Hadran's reign, shows a remarkable rev. depiction: The infant Zeus crowns Amaltheia with a wreath. This is an allusion to the myth of Zeus who was fed by Amaltheia in the shape of a goat. The goat is a symbol for Aigeai as a familiar pun, because goat is Greek AIX, AIGOS.

MALLOS was one of the oldest cities in Cilicia. The hero AMPHILOCHOS is said to be the founder. He was fighting before in Thebes and Troy. He and his brother Mopsus were the most famous seers in Greece. They decided to rule Mallos alternately. Mopsus was first. But when he should give the rule to Amphilochos it came to a deadly duel where both were killed. After their death their souls got along peacefully and temples were built to celebrate them. The oracle of Mallos was said to be more real than that of Delphi!
Under Severus Alexander Mallos became a Roman Colonia. Therefore the Latin inscriptions.

The fig tree was sanctified to the goddess Rumina. Later the twins were found by the shepherd Faustulus. The rest is well-known!
The legend is in Latin because the city was a Roman colonia. The she-wolf looks a bit like a horse!

The reverse shows a scene of the Gigantomachia. After Zeus has locked up the Titans in the Tartaros Gaia sets her sons, the Giants, on the Olympic gods. They are human shaped with snakelike feet. The battle occured at Phlegra. The Giants throw rocks and mountains. They couldn't be killed by gods, only by humans. So Herakles came into play. He shot a poisoned arrow on Alkyoneus and dragged him over the frontier where he died. Athena throw the island of Sicily on another Giant where he was buried. His fire breathing came out of the Aetna until today.

AMK stands for 'the First, the Biggest, the most Beautiful', granted to the city AD 215 upon Caracalla's campaign against the Parths.
G.B = 3.2, capital of three provinces, keeper of two neocorates (Curtis Clay)
For the Lykios there is a very different interpretation too:
The two animals are not wolfes but dogs, symbolizing Mopsus and Amphilochus, called 'the dogs of Apollo' by Lychopron, a 3rd century poet. (Pat Lawrence)

AD 62 Nero divorced Messalina to marry Poppaea. He has two children from her who died early.
AD 65 Nero killed her by kicking in her pregnant belly. Poppaea was totally amoralic - she was
responsible of some of Nero's murders - but famous for her beauty too. The depiction on the rev. gives
an impression of this .

The garment which Artemis here is wearing I have never found on my other coins:
(1) She seems to wear very high boots reaching over her knees
(2) Her hunting skirt seems to have aprons hanging down over her thighs
(3) Her belly seems to be protected by a belly bandage
(4) This bandage seems to be held by two straps over her shoulders.

This garment no longer is the beautiful often coquettish clothing of a young lady but rather the garment of a workman.
