Iceni.jpeg
British Celts, Iceni (East Anglia), Ecen10 - 43 AD
AR unit 14 mm, 1.279 gams,

O: two crescents back to back, pellets between;

R: Celticized horse right, daisy of pellets above, additional pellets before and below, EDN, ECEN or similar (not fully struck) below

Ref: cf. Cottam ABC 1672, Van Arsdell 734

Notes: aF, scyphate. This was the first coin I ever purchased in "modern" times. it was for my Irish mother-in-law who was from Liverpool and it has returned to me upon her death, She appreciated such gifts of historical significance and there was no doubt who would get it when she passed. I bought my first Alexander the Great coin in this same order. I have come a long way since then in my collecting, but I still love this one and the dealer, Forum Ancient Coins.

GermanStatesBavaria.jpeg
German States, Duchy of Bavaria-Landshut, Henry XVI the Rich1393 - 1450 A.D.
Silver pfennig, 15.5 mm, 0.52 grams, 45 degrees
Ötting (Altötting, Germany) mint

O: hound left, tree on far side

R: Gothic letter H between two annulets, struck over raised square (quadratum supercusum)

Ref: Wittelsbach 3435

Notes: VF, rare. This is an interesting coin purchased mainly because it has a dog, but also because I have been to Bavaria-Landshut. I also appreciate its technique of manufacture. I find it quite pleasing in hand. Also, it appears that Henry XVI the Rich was not a nice man.

ManFacedBullCoinFeb2023.jpeg
Neapolis, Campania, Italy270 - 250 BC
AE 21, 5.763 grams, 135 degrees

O: NEOΠOΛITΩN, laureate head of Apollo left, long wavy hair, E behind

R: River-god Acheloios Sebethos, as a man-faced bull, standing right, head turned facing, being crowned by Nike who flies right above, MB monogram below, possibly IΣ in exergue (off flan)

Ref: Potamikon 333, Taliercio IIIa.10, HN Italy 589; BMC Italy p. 115, 219, SNG Cop 505, Sambon 658

Notes: VF, irregular flan shape typical for the type with remnants of casting sprues, nice jade green patina, light corrosion, Campania mint. I will credit Nick Molinari's book, Acheloios, Thales, and The Origin of Philosophy, for me wanting a man-faced bull coin. The book is really good, even if it was over my head at times. Fascinating read and I find his conclusions quite convincing. Knowing what the man faced bull is makes all the difference in understanding these coins. I am thrilled to have an example.

O: Laureate head of Zeus to right

R: Tripod between M E, all within annular wreath

Ref: SNG Cop 525; BCD 727; Grandjean 642-643

Ex-Forum Ancient Coins Lot (part of) Nov 2022; ex BCD with his tag; ex-Pegasi Numismatics with tag; ex-unknown collector tag (post BCD)

Notes: The coin was purchased from Pegasi stock by BCD in Dec 1998 for $20.00. Unknown collector's tag notes it as ex-BCD collection not in Leu sale. Also noted is that this coin is Very Rare. Graded Fine by Pegasi. The pictures I took do not do the obverse justice, I can actually see the Zeus head in hand, but I agree it is Fine and certainly not better. This was a super hard coin to photograph, I took at least 20 photos using different lighting and settings and even cameras. I am still not happy, but not going to spend more time on it.
