ElymaisVH_9_1_2-6A.jpg
Kamnaskires VCirca 54/3-33/2 BC
AR Drachm, 16mm, 3.46 grams, 180 degrees
Seleukeia on the Hedyphon mint. Uncertain SE date.

O: Diademed and draped bust left; [to right, star above anchor]

R: Diademed head left; [date in exergue].

Ref: van't Haaff Type 9.1.2-6A; Alram 464; Sunrise 483.

Notes: Toned, porosity. Near VF. Regarding the van't Haaff attribution, I believe it is certainly Type 9.1.2, I am not so sure it is 6A because the beard is not as long on my coin. Plus, the mintmark is off flan or obscured. For now, I am going with CNG's attribution for lack of a better one from my perusal of van't Haaff.

Kamnaskires-Orodesearly-mid 2nd cent AD
AE Drachm, 16 mm, 3.21 grams

O: Diademed bust facing forward without tuft of hair on top; Large curly tufts or hair horizontally oriented on sides. Pellet in crescent right of bust with one crossbar on anchor. Pellet border.

R: Irregular dashes, no border

Ref: van't Haalf 12.3.1-1A

Notes: Based on Robert L3's comments, I have changed this one from 12.3.1-1B to 12.3.1-1A. I appreciate his comments, see below:

You’ve got this as a VH 12.3.1-1B. Are you sure there is only a single crossbar on the anchor? Almost looks like there might be a faint remnant of a second crossbar - which, if so, would of course prompt an adjustment to the VH number. Might be worth getting this one under a loupe to check.

I agonized over this one initially. The second crossbar is so faint, I thought maybe it was an artifact or something. This one I am pretty sure has no hair tuft on top and has horizontal hair tufts. Assuming that is correct, it has to be 12.3.1-1B or 12.3.1-1A. I think that you are correct, and it is most likely 1A.

R: Dashes without regular pattern, no border.

Ref: van't Haaff Type 12.3.1-2A2 (attributed incorrectly as GIC 5910)

Notes: Seller attributed as GIC 5910, which I disagree with. GIC has two bars at top of anchor, this one has one. This is again a case of me going with van't Haalf versus Sear or others for the king. I think my attribution is more accurate, but I am certainly open to being wrong.

R: Crude diademed head left, squared blundered legend around

Notes: I appreciate Robert L3 for pointing out the following:

You’ve got this one listed as VH 10.3.1-2A. Given the fact that the reverse bust – though crude – is still legible as a bust, and that the reverse legend is still orderly (forming a box, more or less, around the bust), I probably would have called it a VH 10.3.1-1B.

My response: This one was attributed by the dealer, and I didn't look at it closely enough. I agree with you that this is 1B and not 2A.

Ref: van't Haaff (uncertain early Arsacid kings) 10.3.1-1B

Notes and Ref: van't Haalf 10.4.2-3 is my best guess. These are hard to identify. It was attributed by seller as Sear GIC 5890 that I partially disagree with, particularly because van't Haalf does not recognize Kamnaskires VI and an authority on these coins advised me to go with van't Haalf for king attributions. That doesn't make GIC 5890 wrong, per se. The various authorities over the years all have slightly different lists of rulers and these are all addressed authoritatively by van't Haalf.
