Vindex (Gallic issues in support of Vindex) - denarius - RIC 39, BMCRE 42The issues in support of Vindex were struck from March - May in 68 AD, in Gaul. Vindex was Nero's propraetor at Lugdunum. There are two types of this coin: with legend on the obverse (MARS VLTOR - RIC 51) en without (this coin, RIC 39). This type refers to a coin minted during the reign of Augustus, with the buste of Mars on the obverse: RIC 274.
The rebellion of Vindex was supported by Galba. The armies of Upper Germany, commanded by Lucius Verginius Rufus, remained however loyal to Nero, and crushed the forces of Vindex at the battle of Vesontio. Limes
