FORVM ref: "Although RIC lists numerous varieties of Providentia reverses, this particular reverse, with rudder, PROVID AVG, and no mintmarks is unlisted. RIC notes that London issued coins without mintmarks in 287 A.D. As this was the beginning of "British Empire" coinage, coins were often irregular and overstruck on older coins".2 comments

This bust type is unlisted in RIC. There were three previously known that are listed in Constantine`s Dafne Coinage at Constantinople by R.S. Speck and Stephen M. Huston.Two of these coins are officina A and one is officina S, so this one with officina E is an unrecorded example of this extremely rare type.

This mintmark is not associated with Delmatius in RIC, it is an unrecorded issue associated with the next mint mark group and should be included between RIC 389 and RIC 390. The issue with this mint-mark is listed by RIC (p.344) only for Constantine II, Constans and Urbs Roma and all of these are rated as R5, extremely rare.*Alex

This coin was minted some time between Domitian's seventh consulship in 80 AD and the death of Titus in 81 AD. The reverse type appears to be identical to RIC II 727 (Vespasian); BMCRE 747 (Vespasian) however, unlike this coin, the listed coin has the obverse inscription CAESAR AVG F DOMITIANVS COS VI. This coin appears therefore to be a continuation of that type after Vespasian's death with a different obverse inscription. 2 comments

Perhaps an example of the chaos that reign at the imperial mint in 81 AD on Domitian's accession, note the unusual tailed V in AVG which may indicate a Greek celator. The Obverse is as RIC 10B, reverse as RIC 14. I haven't seen another dolphin denarius like this one.2 comments

This coin was minted in 86 A.D. The Minerva standing is a very common reverse for Domitian's denarii. Neither RIC nor RSC list a Minerva standing for Domitian with TRP VI, IMP XII, COS XII. According to the seller, this coin was once part of the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts. The reverse of the coin was reportedly damaged by an adhesive sticker which ate into the silver.

Coins with a horned portrait and the title TR P V were struck in January 222 A.D. After some days or weeks the horn was removed from Elagabalus' portrait. Elagabalus had shocked the public with bizarre behavior including cross dressing and marrying a vestal virgin. Removing the unusual horn from his portrait was probably part of a last ditch effort to show that he had changed, dropping his peculiar Syrian ways. The effort failed. On 11 March 222, Elagabalus and his mother were murdered, dragged through the streets of Rome and dumped into the Tiber.

This type refers to the growing family of Marcus Aurelius and Faustina Jr. The three girls represent the three surviving children (of a total of 7 born) around end of 159 to early 160: Annia Galeria Aurelia Faustina (age 14), Lucilla (12) and Fadilla (1).

Additional information provided by Curtis Clay (19 july 2012): "This type commemorating the birth of a third survivng daughter usually has the legend IVNONI LVCINAE, whereas the type FECVND AVGVSTAE commemorates the birth of the next daughter about a year or so later and shows Fecunditas/Faustina holding two children in her arms while two more stand at her feet.

Strack 1335 knew a sestertius like yours in only one specimen, in Naples, but unfortunately does not illustrate the coin.

The Naples collection was stolen in 1977. Your coin is of nice quality, and has an old-collection look, lightly cleaned on the reverse. I would not be at all surprised if it is the actual Naples coin! ..." Charles S

"Other examples of this rare bust type on Milan coins of the same issue: Göbl pl. 82, 1034u (rev. MARTI PACIFE, P in l. field); pl. 84, 1044u (rev. VIRTVS AVGG, Hercules stg. l. holding branch, club, and lionskin). Neither ill. spec. is from the same obv. die as your coin.
Other AVGG coins of the same issue at Milan: pl. 84, 1044u, just cited; 1045o (apparently from the same VIRTVS AVGG rev. die, different sort of armored obv. die). Roman Empire, Licinius I. AE3This is a very nice example of an AE3 reduced follis for Licinius I, from the mint at Arelate, officina (workshop) 1

Obv inscr: IMP LICINVS P F AVG. The bust of the emperor is wearing a laurel wreath and a cuirass, so it is a B5 class bust. This example is a bit special because the name of the emperor is misspelled.

Rev.: SOLI INVICTO COMITI, with C and S in the two fields r and L, and PARL in the exergue, which is the mint mark for Arelate officina P (for Prima = first) (as I mentioned above).

The coin is a variant of a coin listed in the standard reference Roman Imperial Coinage, vol VII, as #155 for the mint at Arelate (ancient Arles, France). Because of the misspelling this coin is not actually listed, and the "normal" version is rated as an R4.

Apparently this arrangement of the rev. legend is rare: usually it's COS II in exergue and S - C in field. Of seven specimens in the British Museum, only one has the arrangement like this one, with COS II in circular legend and SC in exergue.

That BM coin, no. 862, has a cuirassed bust like this, but head laureate rather than bare.

THIS COIN IS CERTAINLY UNPUBLISHED, IF NOT UNIQUE.
