Unpublished! The majority of the earliest electrum issues were struck on the lighter Milesian weight standard, with hectes weighing approximately 2.35 grams. This example, however is on the heavier Phocaic standard that was used at mints such as Cyzicus, Mysia and Phocaea, Ionia.

BYZANTINE, ALEXIUS III ANGELUS-COMNENUS AE Half? TETARTERON S-2015/7v DOC 5 CLBC 8.4.3v DIANE VARIATION UNLISTED OBV Bust of St. George , beardless and nimbate , wearing tunic, breastplate wearing tunic, breastplate, and sagion; holds spear in r. hand resting on l. shoulder and in l. scroll or hilt of sword AND shield behind left arm.

REV Full length figure of emperor wearing stemma, divitision, and chlamys; holds in r. hand labarum on long shaft and in l. Globus cruciger with patriarchal cross.

Size 17.94mm

Weight 2.4gm

I purchased this as part of a collection from Europe. The coin was attributed by previous owner as S-2017 a much rarer coin to find. Upon reexamining the coin, it turned out it has a shield and hilt of sword that the left hand is holding. On the reverse the gl.cr. has a patriarchal cross, this is seen on his half Tetartera.

The weight is average for for a half Tetarteron and a bit low for a full Tetarteron . the die size is around 15mm, small for a Tetarteron and large for a half.

I associated it with SBCV-2015 but in truth it could be a variation SBCV-2017

AKA Alexius III Diane variation.

Note.
The worship of Hadrian as 'Zeus Olympios' in the east of the empire was also practiced in Miletus. A proof of this is this coinage, which the emperor explicitly names as 'ΟΛΙΜΠΙΟC'. In addition, the archaeological excavations in Miletus have been used to discover a large number of household altars who had been consecrated to Hadrian, who had inscriptions such as "The Caesar Trajan Hadrian Sebastos Zeus Olympios" (Friesen, Imperial Cults, p. 177)

Roman Empire, Elagabalus, 16 May 218 - 11 March 222 A.D. Silver denariusPossibly unique! The combination of this reverse legend with a recumbent bull behind the altar is apparently unpublished and this is the only example known to Forum. The bull is present on a similar type with the reverse legend INVICTVS SACERDOS AVG.

Silver denarius, RSC III 213c var. (no bull); BMCRE V 269 var. (same); Hunter III 68 var. (same); RIC IV 52 (S) var. (same, also no horn); SRCV II 7538 var. (same), NGC XF, strike 5/5, surface 3/5 (2412840-011), Rome mint, weight 3.07g, maximum diameter 18.4mm, die axis 0o, Jan 222 A.D.; obverse IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, horned, laureate, draped and bearded bust right, from the front; reverse P M TR P V COS IIII P P, Elagabalus standing slightly left, wearing Syrian priestly dress, sacrificing from patera in right hand over flaming altar at feet on left, club (or branch) cradled in left hand and arm, star in upper left field, recumbent bull behind altar; NGC certified (slabbed); extremely rare.

Coins with a horned portrait and the title TR P V were struck in January 222 A.D. After some days or weeks the horn was removed from Elagabalus' portrait. Elagabalus had shocked the public with bizarre behavior including cross dressing and marrying a vestal virgin. Removing the unusual horn from his portrait was probably part of a last ditch effort to show that he had changed, dropping his peculiar Syrian ways. The effort failed. On 11 March 222, Elagabalus and his mother were murdered, dragged through the streets of Rome and dumped into the Tiber.

Roman Empire, Licinius I. AE3This is a very nice example of an AE3 reduced follis for Licinius I, from the mint at Arelate, officina (workshop) 1

Obv inscr: IMP LICINVS P F AVG. The bust of the emperor is wearing a laurel wreath and a cuirass, so it is a B5 class bust. This example is a bit special because the name of the emperor is misspelled.

Rev.: SOLI INVICTO COMITI, with C and S in the two fields r and L, and PARL in the exergue, which is the mint mark for Arelate officina P (for Prima = first) (as I mentioned above).

The coin is a variant of a coin listed in the standard reference Roman Imperial Coinage, vol VII, as #155 for the mint at Arelate (ancient Arles, France). Because of the misspelling this coin is not actually listed, and the "normal" version is rated as an R4.

Strack p. 219, 41 (Vienna) = RSC 883b.

Vienna also has a similar denarius with bust laureate, draped r.

These are mules from an old rev. die: the lack of P P in the obverse legend means that it should have been added to the rev. legend, but these coins are from one or more rev. dies that had been engraved before that change was made, and were later erroneously coupled with at least two of the new obv. dies without P P.

"Lucilla, AE As. 9.97g; 26mm. 164-166 AD. Obv: LVCILLAE AVG ANTONINI AVG F, draped bust right. Rev: unclear legend, Venus standing right, holding apple and sceptre, S-C across fields. cf. RIC 1770; Cohen 80. This is the only Lucilla coin in RIC which has a deity standing right holding a sceptre (there is a Diana holding a torch with both hands). The legend seems to contain ..IT or AT.. and ends in A, but there are no coins in RIC which have such a legend. This coin is almost identical to one sold by Noble Coins Australia with the same description, though that one was a dupondius)"

Note by Johny SYSEL: "It could be mule combining Lucilla obverse with Faustna II reverse. But definitely there is Laetitia on reverse not Venus."

Note by Curtis Clay: "I think Johny S is right: a mule with a LAETITIA reverse die meant for Faustina II. Rome mint mules are rare. This one might help to establish the chronology of Lucilla's and Faustina's respective coinages."

Sogidana, uncertain mint, mid-third century BC.

(17 mm, 2.86 g, 6h)
ex- William K. Raymond Collection

The crude style, the retrograde semi-circular legend, the disposition of the mint control and the low weight of this coin are indicative of a Sogdian imitation of the Antiochos I drachm type that was issued by the mint at Ai Khanoum in Baktria during the period 281-261 BC. Unlike the imitative coin the official issue was struck on the Attic weight standard of 4.3 grams. The style of this coin and the full replication of the Ai Khanoum mint control place it early in the Sogdian imitative series, possibly contemporaneous with the lifetime Antiochos I issue that it imitates. Marcanda/Samarkand and Bukhara are likely candidates for the origin of this coin.

Obv.: FAVSTINA AVGVSTA, draped bust of Fautina Junior facing right.
Rev.: FECVND AVGVSTA (around) S C (in field), Fecunditas standing left, holding a child in her arms, two more standing left and right of her raising their right hands.
RIC (Aurelius) unlisted, legend corresponds to RIC 1635 and the representation to RIC 1649
ex Aeternitas Coins & Antiquities (via VCoins)

This type refers to the growing family of Marcus Aurelius and Faustina Jr. The three girls represent the three surviving children (of a total of 7 born) around end of 159 to early 160: Annia Galeria Aurelia Faustina (age 14), Lucilla (12) and Fadilla (1).

Additional information provided by Curtis Clay (19 july 2012): "This type commemorating the birth of a third survivng daughter usually has the legend IVNONI LVCINAE, whereas the type FECVND AVGVSTAE commemorates the birth of the next daughter about a year or so later and shows Fecunditas/Faustina holding two children in her arms while two more stand at her feet.

Strack 1335 knew a sestertius like yours in only one specimen, in Naples, but unfortunately does not illustrate the coin.

The Naples collection was stolen in 1977. Your coin is of nice quality, and has an old-collection look, lightly cleaned on the reverse. I would not be at all surprised if it is the actual Naples coin! ..."

(27 mm, 17.29 g, 5h).

This is the only known example of SC 94.3c that bears a reverse struck from a die on which the anchor that is normally found in the outer left field has been erased. It is the one of two erased anchor issues in the name of Alexander outside of museum collections. The other example SC 94.5 is also to be found in the LT collection. The anchor erasure has not been documented on SC 94.3c, although it is known on three examples of SC 94.4 that bear a ΠAT monogram mint control in the place of the circled NE monogram found on this coin. The obverse of this coin is a die match to an example of SC 94.4, SNG Copenhagen 670, illustrated in Morkholm Plate V, 82. This previously unrecorded example of anchor erasure is further evidence that the erasure was a systematic and deliberate act in the Babylon II mint that appears to have occurred around the time that Seleukos adopted the royal title.

Good very fine, irridesence in fields, slight corrosion reverse right edge, otherwise an attractive coin.

The mongrams on this coin are closer to those recorded by Thompson for the mint of Cius rather than the mint of Heraclea that employed the club symbol with the limited momogram HP
