ROMAN EMPIRE PROVINCIAL, Elagabalus, AE30, Etenna in Pisidia, Zeus enthroned right, unlistedEtenna in Pisidia, Elagabalus, 218-222 AD.

Obv.: [AY] K M AYP - ANT[ΩNEINO] , laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right.
Rev.: ETEN - NEΩ[N] , Zeus enthroned right, holding scepter. Unlisted, same obv. die as von Aulock, Pisidien II, no. 568, pl. 13 ; Rev: cf. ANS 1981.40.23 .

Curtis Clay:
This coin seems to be from the same obv. die as von Aulock, Pisidien II, no. 568, pl. 13. ANTWNEINO before face, vA attributes to Elagabalus, though the same coin, in Athens, had earlier been published as Caracalla.
Zeus seated right is a new type for Elagabalus at this mint, though vA has it both earlier, for Septimius and for Caracalla under Septimius, and later, for Sev. Alex. and Tranquillina.

Patricia Lawrence: It looks as if one of the dies for the Septimius / Julia --and there are at least two rev. dies-- was paired, probably accidentally, with one of her small obverses.

Curtis Clay: For some reason coins of Alex. and Maesa under Tereventinus are rare. Pick knew only two types, three specimens, since 1064 shows Mamaea not Maesa. Hristova/Jekov pp. 189 and 191 try to add two new types, but the readings of empress and/or governor seem doubtful.

Roman Empire, Lucius Verus AE SestertiusLucius Verus AE Sestertius. IMP CAES L AVREL VERVS AVG, bare headed, cuirassed bust right / CONCORD AVGVSTOR COS II, Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus standing opposite, clasping hands. SC in ex.

POSSIBLY UNIQUE

Apparently this arrangement of the rev. legend is rare: usually it's COS II in exergue and S - C in field. Of seven specimens in the British Museum, only one has the arrangement like this one, with COS II in circular legend and SC in exergue.

That BM coin, no. 862, has a cuirassed bust like this, but head laureate rather than bare.

THIS COIN IS CERTAINLY UNPUBLISHED, IF NOT UNIQUE.
EXTREMELY FINE

Roman Empire, Postumus, previously unrecorded cuirassed bustAn unique and previously unrecorded type for an antoninianus of Postumus.
The cuirassed bust devoid of any drapery is what makes this coin so unique.
Struck in january 268 for the Emperor's fourth consulate.
Wonderful portrait, of the finest style of the period.

Vienna also has a similar denarius with bust laureate, draped r.

These are mules from an old rev. die: the lack of P P in the obverse legend means that it should have been added to the rev. legend, but these coins are from one or more rev. dies that had been engraved before that change was made, and were later erroneously coupled with at least two of the new obv. dies without P P.

Note.
The worship of Hadrian as 'Zeus Olympios' in the east of the empire was also practiced in Miletus. A proof of this is this coinage, which the emperor explicitly names as 'ΟΛΙΜΠΙΟC'. In addition, the archaeological excavations in Miletus have been used to discover a large number of household altars who had been consecrated to Hadrian, who had inscriptions such as "The Caesar Trajan Hadrian Sebastos Zeus Olympios" (Friesen, Imperial Cults, p. 177)

This bust type is unlisted in RIC. There were three previously known that are listed in Constantine`s Dafne Coinage at Constantinople by R.S. Speck and Stephen M. Huston. Two of these coins are officina A and one is officina S, so this one with officina E is an unrecorded example of this extremely rare type.

Based on die matches to Holt F8.2 (obverse) and Holt F8.3 (reverse with modified controls) the coin is an immediate precursor to the Holt F8 group and thus fits between Holt’s F7 and F8 groups. Struck at Mint "B" (probably Baktra/Balkh) ca. 230-225 BC.
