I believe this inscription refers to the
granting of privileges related to the
religious precinct known as Neokoros,
to the city of Neapolis-Samaria. As far
as I can tell, Neapolis was the only city
in this region granted such a status.
This elegant inscription contains an extra
"N" in the fourth line, which I have not
seen on any other on-line published coin
of this type. The profiles of Mt. Gerazim
represented on coins of Neapolis have
been used by archaeologists to help
locate the remains of this important
temple complex. Any other information
or ideas on this topic would be welcome.
I do not have access to RPC or other major
reference works at this time. The reverse die
for this coin is not listed in Harl's "Coinage
of Neapolis in Samaria" ANSMN 29, 1984.
The obverse is very similar to Harl's A26,
but with a slight discrepancy with regard
to his inscription as described.v-drome

of the mountain to the surrounding terrain.

This coin commemorates the mythological figure of Cadmus on his quest for his sister, Europa, founding the city of Thebes as a colony of ancient Phoenicia-Tyre in the place where the sacred cow lay down. I love this coin for its connection to ancient mythology and history. Stevenson's Dictionary of Roman Coins gives an excellent description of this same reverse for a coin of Gallienus, on page 825v-drome
