"Obol" As of Marcus AureliusThis as of Marcus Aurleius with reverse of Providentia holding wand over globe has a layer of thick blue crystals on both sides. Many believe that this kind of patina comes from contact with the dead and such coins are therefore know as "obol" coins from the practice of placing payment for the afterlife in the deceased's mouth. It is not certain if there is any truth to these rumours. When coins, like this one, come from ploughed field contexts it is impossible to determine what their original deposition context was. 2 commentsSC

Broken Limes falsa cast imitation Severus Alexander SestertiusThis is a fragment of a cast of a Severus Alexander Sestertius with IMP SEV ALE... and laureate head right. The reverse appears to show Mars advancing right. The fragment weights 4.78 grams and is roughly 1/3 of the ogirinal. It was broken in antiquity as shown by the patina on the break-edges. This coin was found in Lower austria. A cast from the same type was found at Carnuntum (Numismata Carnuntina, imitation #357).SC

Cast Copy of Nero AsThis is a cast copy of a Nero PACE PR TERRA MARIQ PARTA IANVM CLVSIT, Temple of janus reverse As, RIC-65, circa AD65. It was found in France, however, a similar cast imitation was found at Carnuntum (Numismata Carnuntina, imitations #28). In the right-most image you can see a casting fault. This is not a usual casting spur as it is too wide and thin and uneven. It appears to be where metal slightly flowed out of a faulty mould.SC

Contorniate, small. This small contorniate is 5.69 grams, 17 mm diameter, and 4.6 mm thick. The face on the obverse appears to be wearing a lion-skin and may thus be an Alexander-Hercules. On object is visible on the reverse, in the lower right. It appears may be a bow case. The hammering of the edge was very well done.

Halved Augustan AsThis is a halved As of Augustus struck under the moneyer P. Lurius Agrippa in 7 BC. The reverse is [P LVRIVS AGRIP]PA IIIVIR AA[AFF] around large SC. It is clear on the reverse that it was struck at least four times with a chisel to cut it and that once cut most of the way through it was twisted to finish the job resulting in the raised edge at the top of the remaining legend.SC

Holed and Damaged Lead Antoninianus of Gordian IIIThis is a lead copy of Gordian III Antoninianus with IMP GORDIANVS PIV... obverse and [CONCOR]DIA MILIT Concordia seated left reverse, RIC 65 struck around AD 240. It was damaged, likely breaking while being intentionally holed as there are two-square-edged holes on the broken edge. The remains weight 4.27 grams and are 25 mm diameter.SC

Holed and Smoothed Constantine I reduced NummusThis 3.06 gram, 21 mm diameter reduced nummus of Constantine I has the IMP CONSTANTINVS PF AVG obverse legend. However, the reverse has been completely smoothed in antiquity. There are file marks beneath the patina. The coin has been holed though this time from the reverse side to the obverse and through Constantine's head. Despite this it was clearly carefully prepared for mounting on something. SC

Holed Coins, setSet of six holed coins found together in Lower Austria. The first two are unidentifiable but are likely 1st century AD from their fabric. The third is Trajan dupondius SPQR OPTIMO PRICIPI reverse with Spes left. The fourth is a Hadrian as with unidentified reverse. The fifth appears to be Berytus BMC-122, Caracalla and Septimius Severus confronted busts with reverse of Astarte crowned by Nike who stands on column. The last is a Gordian III "biassaria" of Nicaea. All have three holes, mostly of square cross-section, carefully driven from obverse side to reverse. As you can note care has been taken to minimize damage to the faces. These coins are called "soldatenmunzen" (soldiers' coins) in German and are believed by some scholars to have been nailed to standards. However, there is also archeological evidence that they were nailed to shields and there are photos in Dr. Fischer's recent book on the Roman Army of two coins attached to an iron lame of lorica segmentata armour.SC

Lead ? Denarius of Septimius SeverusThis imitation denarius of Septimius Severus has a female seated on reverse - perhaps SECVRITAS PVBLICA. It is very soft like lead but is light - 1.65 grams, 16.5 mm diameter - so might be another alloy. It comes from the Middle East.SC

Limes Falsa cast imitation Antoninus Pius AsThis is a cast imitation of Antoninus Pius As. I can not tell the original type although it has a figure standing on the reverse. It is 10.67 grams, 25 mm diameter. This coin was found in Lower Austria. It is possible that it was based on a Sestertius as there appears to be legend mostly off the flan. The weight is also slightly heavy for a Limes Falsa As.SC

Limes Falsa cast imitation Diva Faustina I AsThis is a cast imitation of Diva Faustina I As DIVA FAV-STINA, Diademed bust right, and a reverse of possibly Spes. It is 6.15 grams, 25 mm diameter. This coin was found in Lower Austria. The obverse detail is very good for a cast but the reverse gives it away.SC

Limes Falsa cast imitation Hadrian AsThis is a cast imitation of Hadrian As IMP CAES DIVI TRA PARTH F DIVI NER NEP TRAIANO HADRIANO AVG, Laureate cuirassed bust right, PONT MAX TR POT COS II, Legionary eagle between two standards, SC, reverse - BMC 1117 from early 118 AD. Mis-strike Diocletian RadiateThe obverse of this coin with mis-strike shows the beginnings of an IMP DIOCLETIANVS .... legend with Radiate draped and cuirassed bust viewed from 3/4 rear. The reverse is almost obliterated but an eagle holding wreath in beak can be seen in the left field as well as what may be IOVI on the legend and R*... in the exergue. The coin is very thin, 2.49 grams and 26 mm diameter.SC
2012-07-159.jpg
Mis-strike Probus RadiateThis radiate 'Aurelianus", likely of Probus, has little detail left on the obverse though a radiate crown and -BV- can be made out. The reverse has two figures clasping hands - like Emperor and Jupiter - and a legend ending in -TER. The exergue has *Q. SC
2012-07-153.jpg
Mis-strike Soli of Constantine IThe obverse of this coin is error free, though has a weak strike in the legend a 3h. However the reverse suffers from a very odd 180 degree flipped double strike. It is R F / RA issue struck at the 4th (quarta) officina of Rome. It is RIC-VII-Rome-2 struck AD 313. All officinae except P are rated scarce (P is rated C1).1 commentsSC

Mistrike Campgate of Constantine IThough having excellent details on face and campgate this coins shows signs of a mis-strike on the obverse legend, possibly the hair above and behind the ear, and the reverse legend top. It is Ferrando 478 and RIC 309 and is dated to 327 - 328. Arelate S F / ARLP issue.1 commentsSC

Trajan Denarius made into jewelleryThis denarius has IMP CAES NERVA TRAIAN AVG GERM, Laureate head right on obverse and PM TRP COSII PP, Vesta seated left on reverse. It is Woytek 60a1, Stack 319, BMC 26 and was struck Fall 98 - end 99 AD. It has had four silver rings attached, one of which has broken off. It is also holed near where the broken ring was, perhaps to replace that fastening device.SC
