The horseman is not Serapis but seems to be the Thracian Rider-god Heros. Serapis riding on a horse is not possible! The bird should be an eagle or sea-eagle like on the city's coat of arms. To call the rider Mitras - as Varbanov has done - is nonsense although there are some similarities with the riding Mithras from Trapezunt. But Mithras never wears a kalathos but always a Phrygian bonnet. Jochen

The type with the l. leaning bearded god is known from the small denominations of Odessos. But on these coins the god is always leaning on a rectangular base and not on a kline with feet. The depiction in the ex. is unclear too. I have never found a similar depiction. I think it is a god from the ambit of the Great God of Odessos depicted like a river-god with a 'meadow' below. But cruciate is the kline.

Pick writes: The obv. is the exact imitation of some Roman consecration denari, so that face, hair and beard step by step seem to be re-cut. That is the explanation too that for the reproduction of the legend DIVO SEVERO PIO instead of the usual term Theos the Latin loan word DIVUS was taken, which otherwise never occurs on coins - at least on authentic ones.

The 2nd series of autonomous coinage has 4 groups: the 1st group (n. 2554-2559) matches in the style of the obverse totally the 'Dreier' of the youthful Commodus, so we have a safe clue for the time of this coinage (Pick p.614)

The bull and the lion are symbols of the two legions standing in Viminacium, the legio VII Claudia Pia Fidelis and the legio IIII Flavia Felix.
AN VIII stands for the 8th year of the mint of Viminacium (AD 239-255) AD 247 Jochen

very rare, VF, nice green patina
This is one of the nicest depictions of the - a bit boring - issues of Viminacium. Decius here looks like Philipp I and the long legend without the cognomen TRAIANVS too indicate a very early date may be before his acception of the Augustus title in Sept./Oct. 249.Jochen
