Obv.: Crowned FM monogram flanked by curled dolphin right Obverse legend: FR ET MA D G R R SCOT D D VIEN Rev.:VICIT VERITAS [year] Crowned lion rampant left. VF, typical striking weakness. Reference: Spink 5450. Counterstruck with a heart & star (the badge of James, Earl of Morton, who was Regent on the accession of James VI) Actual Weight: 0,55 gr Diam.: 13-14 mm
*NOTE: At the time of its issue, this small and very base coin was worth three-halfpence Scottish, or the equivalent of a French denier. It was issued during Mary's very short marriage to Francis, the Dauphin of France in the late 1550's, and has the FM monogram that reflected the dual monarchy of France and Scotland from 1558-1560. However, despite the miniscule denomination of this coin, it was heavily counterfeited.
