During 2005-08 a huge number of coins became available for purchase on French eBay. These all came from a hoard, presumably undeclared. There were a large number of London mint issues amongst them. The eBay seller ID was 'Crisous01'.

Crispus_28cf__CT_9_03_016_-_Tx_-_White29.jpg
The London Mint. Contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. cf. CT 9.03.016; cf. RIC VII 231Barbarous imitation of Crispus, as Caesar, BI Nummus. Imitating London, c. AD 320-324. IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES, helmeted and cuirassed bust left, holding spear over right shoulder, shield decorated with Gorgoneion on left arm / BEATA TRANQVILLITAS, globe on altar inscribed VOT/IS/XX in three lines, three stars above; PLON in exergue. 1.98g, 18mm, 9h.

Ex Dr Lars Ramskold Collection (Leu Numismatik Web Auction 28, 12th December 2023, Lot 4483).

The style of this coin is clearly unofficial, indicating that it is a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. The obverse shows a fascinating abstract gorgoneion on the shield. Its closest match in Cloke & Toone is CT 9.03.016, but the legend 'IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES' was never used at the London mint.

I was pleased to acquire this coin as it joins my Constantine bust issue with the same reverse (5.03.015). It is a rare London mint issue, struck by Constantine as Caesar in order to solidify and celebrate the alliance between Constantine & Maximian, whilst also showing support for Maxentius who was occupying Rome at the time. The legend 'Romae Aeter' translated means 'To eternal Rome'. These "Italianate' series of coins, as they have become known, are rare due to the fact they were only issued during a period of roughly one month in AD 307.

The issues with the bust of Maximian are the far rarer of the two coins; with there being just 6 known examples versus 21 for Constantine (although many of these are not available to trade). This coin will be a plate coin in the forthcoming RML (Elks, RML 212).

Vitellius struck his earliest coins during his brief reign at the mint of Tarraco (modern day Tarragona in Spanish Catalonia). This one features one of my favourite portraits in my entire collection.

Hadrian_Obv___Rev_28White29_3.jpg
The Roman Empire. Hadrian AR Denarius (RIC II.3 313)Hadrian AR Denarius. Rome, AD 120-121. IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG, laureate bust right, with slight drapery over far shoulder / P M TR P COS III, Hadrian writing at desk seated left on platform, attendant stood behind, Liberalitas in background holding up coin scoop, citizen ascending steps of platform holding out fold of toga; LIBERAL AVG / III in exergue. RIC II.3 313; BMCRE 298. 3.09g, 17mm, 6h.

Ex Den of Antiquity eBay sale, 25th January 2016.

One of the earliest coins in my collection, and one that I have never been able to bring myself to part with. I find this reverse type really interesting, and what the coin lacks in grade it makes up for with plenty of character! This is a coin that clearly remained in circulation for some time, and likely passed between the hands of many a Roman citizen. There is a connection to history with worn coins like these that I find less readily available when holding a coin in pristine mint state (but I still love those too...)

Here we see a ‘Liberalitas’ scene, first used on the coins of Hadrian and continued by subsequent rulers well into the 3rd century AD. Liberalitas was the personification of generosity, and we can see her lurking in the background here (possibly as a statue) and holding some sort of monetary device; this is described in RIC II.3 as a ‘coin scoop’ but i’ve seen it described as a coin counting board, abacus or tessera in various places over the years. Hadrian himself is sat writing at a desk whilst a Roman citizen extends his toga out to collect a donation or gift of money from the Emperor. Meanwhile an attended stands behind the emperor...perhaps they could be a body guard or clerk of some sort? The coin manages to fit an awful lot of detail into a tiny space. In the exergue we have ‘LIBERAL AVG III’ (although the ‘III’ is missing due to the coin wear on a small flan) and advertises that this was the third time Hadrian had shown his generosity and made a distribution to the people.

The London Mint. CT 4.02.016; RIC VI 59aSeverus II, as Caesar, BI Nummus. London, 1 May 305 - 26th July 306. SEVERVS NOBILISSIMVS CAES, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / GENIO POPVLI ROMANI, Genius standing left, modius on head, chlamys over left shoulder, holding patera and cornucopiae. 8.53g, 28mm, 7h.

Ex Roma Numismatics E-Sale 114, 23rd November 2023, Lot 1226.
From the Rauceby Hoard, Lincolnshire, 9th July 2017 (PAS ref LIN-F6D516; BM ref 2017 T649).

CT Rarity: C (many known examples).

Part of a hoard found in Lincolnshire, UK, on 9th July 2017 by two metal detectorists. An archaeological excavation of the site subsequently took place on 25th July 2017. The coins were found in a ceramic vessel which was buried in the centre of a large oval pit lined with rough quarried limestone. The pot appears to have been placed on the limestone base and then further pieces of limestone were packed around it all the way up to the top of the pit. Dr Adam Daubney, the finds liaison officer, has argued that this careful burial method suggests the pot may have been a ceremonial or votive offering and hence may be evidence of so-called 'ritual' hoarding in Roman Britain. The coins found were predominantly billon nummi dating from between AD 294 and 307-8, and is the largest fully recorded Roman find from this period in Britain. This is the fifth coin from the Rauceby hoard to join my collection.
