Constantinian Altar issues - Irregulars

IMG_2107.jpg

The Constantinian Altar series was subject to some copying. This album illustrates a selection of examples I have come across. Several pair obverses appropriate to one of the three mints producing the type (London, Lyons and Trier) with reverses carrying the mintmark of another.

Constantinian Altar issues from London 320-324

Toone_360_RIC_272.jpg

This album contains a selection of Constantine's BEATA TRANQVILLITAS and BEAT TRANQLITAS issues from the London mint. They are arranged by emperor and then by issue as revised in Marsden's article in the April 2012 issue of the Numismatic Circular. The reference used is Toone's article in the September 2010 edition of the Numismatic Circular. Nothing startling but hopefully this will become with time a reasonably complete visual catalogue of most of the examples Lee cites in his important paper.

Constantinian Altar issues from Trier

constantine_2_victoriola.JPG

This album contains a selection of the BEATA TRANQVILLITAS Altar issues struck for Constantine I, Crispus and Constantine II at Trier in the early 320s. The numbering follows Dieter and Zschucke's catalogue 'Die Romische Munzserie Beata Tranquillitas in der Pragestatte Trier 321-323' (Trier 2004)

Gallic Empire coinages - Laelian, Marius & Victorinus

IMG_0400.jpg

This gallery is devoted to the coinage of the Gallic emperors Laelian (269), Marius (269) and Victorinus (269-71). For the sake of convenience it also includes coins of the deified Victorinus although these were in fact struck under his successor Tetricus I.

Irregular radiate manufacture c.260-286

abm_cut_blank.jpg

NO COINS - Or at least no proper coins...
This album is devoted to the various production techniques of irregular antoniniani, the so-called 'barbarous radiates'. It will feature copper alloy bars, blanks, chopped-up radiates and all the other material used to manufacture these wonderful imitations. Enjoy!

Irregular wolf and twins imitations, c.330-348

ABM032.jpg

This gallery is devoted to contemporary ('barbarous') imitations of Constantine's wolf and twins coinage, struck at all operational mints from 330. These imitations appear to have been produced until c.348 and vary enormously in terms of their size, weight and style.

Roman coins relating to Britain

abm_hadrian_britannia_as.jpg

This gallery is devoted to coins whose reverse types have a British relevance. It will not contain coins struck in Britain simply because they were struck in Britain nor will it contain coins where the emperor's titles refer to him as Britannicus. Thus it comprises a small but easily-defined group of examples.

VRBS ROMA wolf and twins issues

SMANdelta~0.jpg

This gallery is devoted to official issues of Constantine's VRBS ROMA wolf and twins coinage struck at 13 mints across the empire. The coverage will be fairly extensive when this gallery is completed with a number of unpublished varieties. In each case the mint name is followed by the issue number for the wolf and twins series as a whole at that mint and then the workshop letter and then the mintmark itself.
