Africa

commodus1.jpg

The first coins in North Africa were minted in the 6th Century BC at the Greek colony of Kyrene in modern day Libya. To be followed by Carthage around the 5-4th century BC. In ancient times coins have been minted in North Africa by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Vandals as well as the local Numidians and Mauretanians. With the last coins proabably being stuck during the time of Constans II, the great grandson of the exarch of Carthage as a result of the subsequent Arabs invasion and conquest of North Africa starting soon after his reign began in 641.

Aksumite

Joel.jpg

Aksum (modern day Ethiopia) first started minting coins in 270 AD probably as a result of increasing trade connections with Rome and Arabia. Aksum was the second country after Rome to accept christianity as the official state religion and was the first to make use of Christian imagery c.330 AD on its coinage. It is the only known Sub Saharan African country to mint coins during ancient times.
