G-Day miquel, your coin is nice mate Wink.I got one just like it Surprised
Frans D   [Dec 29, 2008 at 03:15 PM]
Dear Miguel, if Nugget has the same coin, I have a similar one: same texts, bust laureate only, different reverse die. A similar one was published in ANS Journal of June 2002.
regards,

Frans

My Sear II has this coin as #4249 = RIC 945 = C 980 var.

SearII#4249=RIC 945 refers to a sestertius, not an as. This type is definitely not listed in RIC, nor in Sear II, nor in BMCRE (would have been in vol VI, page 337). The crazy thing is: I got exactly the same type too!!! Different obv. die. Got it from Forum Ancient Coins in 2002 (#2034) with the text: "not listed in references held by FORVM similar to RIC 953 except only radiate dupondius listed [...] very rare, possibly unpublished or unique". It seems we are dealing with an issue that is not so rare after all, but missed by the important reference works we are currently using. I found a reference to a publication concering this type from 2003 (not the one Frans D mentions): Bakes, James. An Apparently Unpublished As of Antoninus Pius, The Journal of the Classical and Medieval Numismatic Society 4.3 (September 2003), pp. 127-128, illus. The author describes a new as of Antoninus Pius with Pax reverse and the legends ANTONINVS AVG PI VS PP IMP II and TRPO TXIX COS IIII SC. (Oliver D. Hoover). Unfortunately I have no access to the full article.
