Thessaly, Koinon (League) AE Disassarion, Hadrian (BCD Thessaly II 952.2)
|
Roman Provincial. Thessaly, Koinon. Hadrian AE Diassarion (21mm, 3.20 g, 6h), Ulpius Nikomachos, strategos, c. 123-125 CE (?).
Obv: AΔPIANON KAICAPA ΘЄCCAΛOI. Laureate bust right, aegis (?) at point of bust
Rev: (CTPA) OX NIK OMAXOY. Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm.
Ref: BCD Thessaly II 952.2 corr. (this coin; incorrectly cited as published in Burrer); Burrer Em. 1, Series 1, 99 corr. (A22/R74; Є not E; variation of monogram); RPC III 452.
Prov: Ex BCD Collection of Thessaly, Part II, with his collector tag (acq. Dec 1996, reportedly found in W. Thess.; Triton XV [3 Jan 2012], Lot 952 [part, corr.]).
Notes: This coin is erroneously described in BCD Thessaly II as having been published in Burrer. BCD's coins were known to Burrer when his book was published in 1993 (many illustrated, such as my Nero/Apollo AE), but BCD's notes indicate he did not acquire this one until 1996. Even accounting for the possibility Burrer knew of it earlier, and cataloging error, I don't see any description in Burrer's catalog consistent with this specimen.
