Phrygia, Apameia, pseudo-autonomous, BMC 90
AE 19, 3.29g
struck c. 3rd century AD
obv. DH - MOC
Bust of Demos, bearded, draped, laureate(?), r.
rev. APA - MEW - N (starting right above)
Marsyas, nude, nebris flowing behind him, advancing r., playing double
       flute
BMC 90; SNG Copenhagen 200
VF

Marsyas playing the auloi, the typical double-flute. Actually the auloi was not a simple flute but a tongued instrument so more like an oboe. Both parts often were tuned in the distance of an octave but that could be changed. Here you can clearly see the grip holes.
