S.3217* Commonwealth
Shilling of The Commonwealth of England 1649-1660
Pattern shilling by Blondeau
Mint: Drury House, London
Mintmark: Sun
1651
S. -
ESC 1002
SH-90

This coin, made by the machinery of the Frenchman Pierre Blondeau, was innovative and of high quality, but met with resistance by the old hammered coin moneyers. Blondeau's pattern coinage of 1651 was only made in small numbers. His coinage of Oliver Cromwell was made in greater numbers, but it was not until the restoration that the advantages of the milled process in coin manufacture was truly recognized. Thus, these rare Commonwealth coins represent a small step forward toward the modern era of coinage.

Ex- Sovereign Rarities Auction 7 (lot 202), Baldwin's Auction 96 (lot 3387), P Finn list 18 (#328), Chase collection
