ROMAN SPAIN, Indigenous imitation of Republican Rome. c. 100 BC. AE20 or Semis,
|
3.17g (20mm, 2h).
Laureate head of Jupiter with flowing hair and stylized portrait; S behind head / Prow of ship with S above and ROMA below.
*The Roman influence on the early Spain is clearly evident in this coinage which is abundantly found in the area of Andalucia at the far southern end of Spain. These coins are a beautiful stylized version of the anonymous aes grave coinage from the early Roman Republic.
References: ACIP 2659; Burgos R44
Grade: Irregular flan. Interesting stylized portrait.
