BYZANTINE, Manuel I 1143-1180 Constantinople
|
Obv: Christ Enthroned
Rev: Virgin Crowning Emperor
Sear 1966
This coin has been very neatly clipped, in contrast to the crudely clipped Latin trachea that are quite common. Its size is 17 mm. According to DO Vol IV, some trachea of John II through Alexius III were officially clipped in Constantinople between 1195 and 1204 to reduce their bullion value to their actual face value. This practice apparently ended with the Latin conquest in 1204.
Coins of this type are pictured in DO VOl IV Plate LIII, 13d.22 and 13f.38.
