|
BITHYNIA. Calchedon. Claudius. Æ 24. A.D. 41-54 (likely struck late in that period). Obv: ...KΛAYΔIOYKAIΣAPO...TOΣ. Bare head left; countermark before neck. Rev: KAΛXAΔONIΩN. Laureate and draped bust of Apollo right; lyre at far shoulder. Ref: RPC 1787 (1 pc); Sear 438. Axis: 210°. Weight: 7.46 g. CM: Monogram of PKA, in rectangular punch, 3 x 6.5 mm. Howgego 632 sim. Note: Howgego 632 is applied to 12 coins of the Thracian king Rhoemetalces I. This countermark is similar, although with the letter "A" added. Could it possibly also be a reference to Rhoemetalces Caesar? RPC argues that Calchedon formed part of Rhoemetalces Kingdom of Thrace. Collection Automan.
